Metservice has extended this warning to include the South Waikato and Whakatane districts.
Today
3.32pm
Metservice is advising people to expect torrential rain and frequent lightning strikes as thunderstorms move towards the Taupo and lower Waikato regions.
The storm is expected to move eastsoutheast towards Taupo, Wairakei and Lake Taupo at 3.15pm and affect Rangitaiki and Iwitahi at 3.45pm.
What you need to know:
- Torrential rain is forecast, with a possibility of flash flooding about streams, gullies and in urban areas.
- The National Emergency Management Agency advises to seek shelter, away from windows and stay out of marine areas.
- Move cars under cover, away from trees.
- Make sure you have a plan in the event that an power outage occurs.

Currently, trout fishing adds $11 million to the local economy, with more benefits forecast if mass farming is authorised. However, the NZ Federation of Freshwater Anglers has highlighted a list of potential issues with farming including disease, poaching and a blackmarket, genetic damage from escapees and polluted effluent.

The major works will take place between Monday November 30 and Wednesday December 23 and include upgrading the intersection to a roundabout, adding raised pedestrian crossings and improving access into, and out of, Horomatangi Street.
Construction Programme Manager Ian Gray said the team have worked closely with contractors Camex and designers WSP as well as businesses and retailers to minimise disruption and ensure the roads remain open during business hours, as much as possible.
“Our main goal in upgrading this intersection is to improve pedestrian access across Ruapehu and Horomatangi, while also improving vehicle access in and out of Horomatangi Street, which businesses have asked for. At present, there are no right turns when exiting Horomatangi, and a roundabout will address this.
“The project team has been out and met with businesses and retailers to ensure they are aware of the work that is being undertaken and we will continue to work closely with them to minimise disruption as much as possible.”
Once the first phase is complete, the next phase will be from January 6 and will include realigning each corner, repaving, new seating and plantings to enhance the sense of place unique to the Taupo CBD.

The dioxin warning is a precautionary measure and the number of people the notice affects is low, with a total of 212 households within the buffer zone. Abatement notices have been issued to the landfill owner in relation to breaches of the Resource Management Act.
