Around 16,000 power customers in the Taupō area are without power after planned maintenance went wrong.
A spokesperson for Unison said something went wrong during planned maintenance at Transpower's Wairakei grid exit point.
She said Unison would keep customers updated via their Facebook page. At this stage power wasn't likely to be back on until around 4pm.
"It is a Transpower issue and we are working closely with them to sort it."
A post on the Transpower page apologised to those currently without power.
"Our crews are currently investigating and we will provide updates on this page as they become available," it read.
