There are renewed calls for after-hours care in Rangiora with a petition attracting nearly 1000 signatures in its first week.

Sandi McLean said she decided to take action after seeing the district's population grow and hearing horror stories about North Canterbury families spending all day waiting to be seen in Christchurch.

"There are about 70,000 people [in Waimakariri], yet nothing here – not even an emergency on-call doctor. Oxford, Kaiapoi, Rangiora, even Pegasus is in our area. If it's a weekend all those people just have to go to [Christchurch]."

If you have missed the collection or your bag is too heavy to be collected you can take it to the dump yourself at no charge. Or if you have several that you want to get rid of at once you can do the same. This is not so if there is only wheelie bin collection as in Chch. You can't take any black rubbish bags to the dump there. I, for one, want to retain the independence of being able to dispose of my bags when it suits me.

The lake in the centre of a North Canterbury town is off limits for the fifth consecutive summer, and some residents are tiring of the ongoing health warnings.

This year's health warning for Pegasus Lake was issued by the Canterbury District Health Board on January 28, two weeks earlier than last year, after potentially toxic blue-green algae (planktonic cyanobacteria) was found.

A warning has been issued for the man-made lake every summer since 2014-15 and usually remains in place until April.
