Hurunui College head student Tessa Allen spearheaded a proactive day of action to support the climate change strikes happening across New Zealand.

Department of Conservation endangered species ambassador Nicola Toki spoke to students about the need to be environmental heroes, as well as what climate change means for New Zealand's native species.

Students spent time creating posters, using recycled cardboard, paper and paints and went on to protest outside the school gate.

Principal Stephen Beck said he was very supportive of the efforts of students from across the country in confronting the apathetic attitudes many adults have towards the overwhelming evidence and impact of climate change.

The school is beginning to take its own steps to address the issue. It has started the process of installing solar panels as it hopes to transition away from its dependence on coal boiler heating.

More than 100 teams helped raised about $4500 to upgrade technology at Amberley School by completing a series of mystery challenges.

The second annual Amberley Rellie Challenge was held at the Hurunui school last month (September), featuring 107 teams of two.

Organisers say the teams, who started in waves of 10, had to complete 10 mystery challenges including a word scramble, creating a unique handshake, a three-legged race and constructing a house from marshmallows and toothpicks.

"This fundraising event is all about what we stand for as a school. Our PRIDE values are cornerstones of our school: personal best, respect, integrity, determination, and enjoyment," a spokeswoman said.

"These were all certainly shown and so cool to see so many happy smiling faces enjoying themselves with family."

The school plans to hold the third Amberley Rellie Challenge in 2020.

Young father? Make a will! - to appoint a replacement guardian

Director / lawyer from Kiwilaw

If you have a child - even if they don't live with you - you should appoint a 'testamentary guardian' - someone who will replace you as one of your child's guardians, if you die. Usually people do that as part of their will.

If you have a child - even if they don't live with you - you should appoint a 'testamentary guardian' - someone who will replace you as one of your child's guardians, if you die. Usually people do that as part of their will.
Death - you don't want to think about it? Well, it happens! (Road toll, workplace accidents, whatever.)
If it happens to you, things will be much worse for your parents and your child's mother, if you haven't made a will and therefore you leave them with huge legal hassles at what will already be an awful time.
Write your own will if you want to. Or download an online one. Or go to a lawyer or the Public Trust. Whatever. Just do it!
(Guardians are responsible for the big decisions in a child's life. The mother is one guardian. Nowadays most fathers are automatically guardians by law. Even if they are not, they can still appoint a testamentary guardian.)
Kiwilaw's online $69 will includes appointing a testamentary guardian. You could use it to do a basic will now, download it, print it, sign in front of 2 independent adult witnesses. Appoint a parent or sibling or partner as executor, and a friend as backup executor. Leave everything to your partner or child/ren. Appoint a testamentary guardian. Keep it that simple.
Then revise it in a few days' time - no extra charge - if you want to go into more detail about your property, etc.
Please, just do it. Somehow, just do it. Today would be good. (Photo is from iStock.)

One minor flaw is the very small dent near the petrol cap from a trailer being backed into it!

The Greens have announced support for voting at 16.

Green party co-leader James Shaw said he saw "switched on" young people demanding to be heard by politicians. They were desperately unhappy about the decisions political leaders were making about their futures.
