Building work at Rangiora's newest school, Te Matauru Primary, will continue after it officially opens for the school year.

Some parts of the school still look more like a building site than playing fields, but the group walked around the administration and teaching blocks, and had a sneak preview of the school hall.

Landscaping is expected to continue over the next two weeks, before the school officially opens to its new pupils on February 7.

The technology block and additional teaching space is expected to be completed later in term 1.

Despite protests, a petition and a series of meetings, Woodend residents had become resigned to a 10-year wait after the NZ Transport Agency confirmed the bypass around their town was not on its short-term agenda.

A public counter has opened at Rangiora's temporary police station at 200 King St after the main building closed suddenly for repairs last year.

The High St station closed in September after earthquake strengthening concerns were raised during a refurbishment.

Canterbury rural area prevention manager Detective Senior Sergeant Greg Cottam says repairs to the High St police station are taking longer than expected.

"As always, police are contactable 24/7 by calling 111 in an emergency and 105 for all other non-emergency matters."

The temporary public counter will be open from 9am to 4pm, Monday to Friday.
