Dianne Pierce said she was flabbergasted at the cost quoted for a taxi for her neighbour, a wheelchair-bound patient – a $500 one-way trip to Rangiora, just 30 kilometres away.
All patients from Rangiora assessed by a paramedic and sent to the emergency department are eligible for a taxi home.
Canterbury District Health Board consumer council rural representative Joanne Gumbrell said the main problem was people not being aware of their rights, and that the service is not promoted by the CDHB or hospital staff.

Earlier this month, one of the owners of the store was working behind the counter when a man entered the store and demanded money.
He walked behind the counter to the cash register and took a large sum of money, but the owner very quickly managed to activate the anti-theft smoke canon and the offender fled the shop.
Seeing what happened, the members of the public chased the offender and caught him, holding him until Police arrived soon afterwards.
He was then arrested and taken into custody.
A 40-year-old man has been charged with theft and was due to appear in the Waitakere District Court last week.
The money taken was returned to the dairy owners (pictured on the left), who were very grateful to those who stepped in to help.
A great result and example of people going above and beyond to look out for people in their local community.

Have you noticed that your windows are stiff, or the handle is a bit loose?
Depending on age, quality and probably a little bit determined by luck, different parts of a window can’t work anymore:
• Locking pins no longer lock exactly
• Window handle is difficult or difficult to turn
• Window sash does not fit properly in the frame (must be lifted or pushed in)
• Window handle wobbles
If you have windows that are stiff to open or close or leave big draught gaps give us a call on 0800 25 25 00 for a free estimate.
Hinges can easily be replaced without worrying about the cost of replacing the whole window.

We'd love to hear about the great places you've discovered over your summer holidays, whether it's somewhere local or on a trip away. Did you come across a particularly amazing beach, camping ground, town, walk or scenic spot? What made it so special? Any activities or places to eat and drink you can recommend in the area would also be much appreciated. As usual, please include 'NFP' (not for publication) in your comment if you don't want it included in a travel article.
Cheers.

We are still on the lookout for a suitable house to rent in Kaiapoi. We are both older folks, we don't smoke and have no pets. We would like a long term rental, preferably a three-bedroom home, but we could probably consider a two-bedroom providing that the garage is a double, this, so that we can store our bikes, car etc and there is room enough so that I can continue working at my sign business.
We want to stay in Kaiapoi as we both like it here. A garden would be welcome as Paul has a keen interest in that.
We also have excellent references.
So if you know of anywhere that might be suitable please get in touch. Thank you to all, Lynda and Paul.😄
