A Smiths City spokesman would not comment following the company's announcement that its post-pandemic restructure would likely cause some stores and employees to face the axe.

The furniture and electronics retailer had not yet identified which stores would close or how many staff members would be affected, but was due to decide after talks with its 465 staff and its landlords.

Blenheim's Smiths City building is the biggest in the Marlborough District Council's portfolio, at 1800-square metres.

Marlborough restaurants and hotels are grappling with the challenges to operate safely in alert level two.

Restaurants have started preparing to follow the Government’s “three S’s” rules of social distancing — seated, separated, and single-server, when the move to level two is permitted. The Government is due to announce that decision today.

The rules mean all patrons must be seated, there must be appropriate distancing between tables, and each table must have a single server, with no counter service available to minimise contact.

Marlborough Public House co-owner Paul Frost said his restaurant had a capacity of 200 customers but under the new rules he can only have 100 people in the venue, which meant only 85 customers and 15 staff.

The first whistle of Tasman's rugby restart is still a month away but a game plan for the 2020 season is about to be drawn up.

The coronavirus lockdown forced the suspension of rugby at all levels in March, with players and administrators left uncertain over when they could return to the paddock.

However, with the possibility of level three restrictions being lifted in the coming days, discussions around the shape of the remaining season are set to begin.

Tasman Rugby Union chief executive Tony Lewis said work was underway to establish return to play guidelines and event management at the region's grounds, while working with clubs to "work out the best systems" following health guidelines for level two.

Garden Marlborough chairman Tim Crawford says planning for the November event is moving “full steam ahead”, but the final call would be made at the end of May.

Crawford said they were planning for the coronavirus restrictions to be "close enough to normal" by November to carry on with the event.

Preparations for the 2021 Classic Fighters Airshow at Omaka Aerodrome have been underway for a year, and while organiser Graham Orphan is putting contingency plans in place, organisers were assuming it would go ahead.

Resene is proud to be supporting the 17th annual NZ Art Show - this year with a twist! More than 150 emerging contemporary artists are set to inspire any art collector in this dynamic virtual exhibition.

This new initiative is the brainchild of the show as it embraces the opportunity to continue to support some of NZ’s hottest new artists on the art scene despite the limitations of Covid-19 lockdown.

All artists have been selected by a panel of experts, promising quality and talent deserved of any collection. Art lovers can be assured that they can purchase with confidence, liaising directly with the artists.

Visitors can explore new artworks by some of the show’s favourite and most successful artists including Jane Blackmore, Runa + Holly, Tanya Blong, Joel Hart and Nikki Corbishley while discovering the hottest and newest artists on the NZ Arts scene. Glass works by the talented Richard Landers (a crowd favourite at last year’s show) also feature, alongside contemporary photographic works, exquisite and traditional watercolours, gorgeous florals, and artworks that provoke thought and conversation.

Go to artshow.co.nz where you can browse and purchase hundreds of original artworks all from the comfort of your own home from May 1st. Show your support and help keep the arts alive and active in NZ!
