This year's award-winning Wasp Wipeout campaign is now underway and once again we're appealing to anyone who wishes to get involved with the campaign by volunteering their time to help lay bait in wasp-ravaged areas.

If spare time is a rarity - not to worry! This year’s Givealittle page is now live and we’re aiming to fundraise $25,000 for the Tasman Environment Trust. All money raised will go towards the purchase of bait and bait stations to continue and expand wasp control operations.

Find out more about this destructive pest by reading through our new interactive feature on Stuff which explores the tools we have in the fight to rid wasps from New Zealand for good.

Op Shop - Hibiscus Coast Presbyterian Church
Volunteers Urgently Needed
Volunteering at our Op Shop is more than just a good use of free time - it's fun.

Shop manager Val Dymock is on the lookout for new volunteers and says anyone with a few hours to spare might want to consider spending it volunteering at the shop.

"It's a place to come and have a laugh and make new friends," she says. "People are feeling isolated and don't necessarily want to come out, but our Op Shop are doing what we can to provide this place for people to still come to make friends and have a laugh."

The shop is invested in our local community and supports various community initiatives, schools, hospital Chaplains and needy families.

"Without volunteers, we can't open and can't make money to provide these services," says Val who runs the Op Shop.

The shop also provides a service for locals who might not be able to buy things new.

"We can kit you out, your house out, your kitchen out. There's everything here and the price range is starting at a dollar," says Val.

"And we cater for all demographics - antique dealers, people who want to buy stuff and put it on Trade Me to people who want to buy clothes from an op shop because they don't want to buy new for sustainability reasons. But without staff we can't provide all those things."

If you are interested, please call Val on: 021 133 6545 or call in at the Op Shop

We can show people round if they feel daunted at the prospect of something new - come in and have a look around the shop, meet a few people and we can go from there.

Kia ora Tāmaki Makaurau.

Auckland Council is looking to scrap bin tags in parts of Auckland.

The bin tags – or a pay as you throw (PAYT) system – were rolled out in West Auckland, Papakura and on the North Shore between 2017 and 2018.

Rather than paying for kerbside rubbish collection as part of their rates, residents in these areas purchase bin tags from supermarkets, council service centres and libraries, and attach them to their bin on rubbish collection day.

The bin tags were part of the council’s strategy to achieve its goal of zero waste to landfill by 2040, with one standard sized bin (120L, bin tag cost $4.25) fitting the equivalent of, and removing the need for, two plastic rubbish bags.

The council had planned on rolling out this system across the entire region, however it now believes it is too expensive to operate and lacks the financial incentive needed to make people reduce their waste.

Now, it is proposing to move the entire region to a rates-funded collection service, with the choice of three rubbish bin sizes to cater to different household needs and costs.

If the proposal to goes ahead, it is estimated Aucklanders will pay $314 per year for their rubbish, recycling and inorganic collection. Including food scraps collection, this will cost $375.

If the entire region moves to a PAYT system, it is expected each household would spend $353 on bin tags each year, or $415 including food scraps collection. This estimate is based on the current average collection rate of a household with a standard 120L bin.

Consultation on the matter will begin on February 28. So, what do you think should happen?

The marina itself owns the boat, after its previous owner went into rent arrears.

But now the marina is selling NZL 20 in hopes that someone can take it on as a project and get it back on the water.
