Karikari Peninsula scrub fire doubles in size overnight

A scrub fire caused by fallen powerlines on Thursday has ripped through 100 hectares overnight, leaving 11 people without power.
Four helicopters, 20 rural firefighters and a 12 tonne digger were working on the blaze and were hoping to have it under control by 4.30pm on Friday. It comes as mapping by NIWA revealed soils were "extremely" drier than normal and drought conditions were evident in some parts of Northland.

Birthday celebrations are in order, as a Northland duck - aptly named Donald - turned 25 years old on Saturday. Donald's owner, Shane O'Leary, believes Donald could be the oldest duck in the world.
Pekin and Indian runner crossbreed Donald was rescued as a ducking from a flood on December 7, 1994, in Hukerenui. A duck's average life expectancy ranges from five to 12 years, however Donald is showing no signs of slowing down. His favourite activities are swimming and diving in his pond.

They tend the impressive 100-year-old mulberry tree and the second oldest pear tree in New Zealand which was planted in the 1830s as well as the heritage roses; there are 40 different types including climbing tea roses, chestnut roses and old bush China roses.
