Poll: Priority lanes the best option for Nelson's traffic problem?

Tim Newman Reporter from The Nelson Mail

Responders to an NZTA survey have shown a preference for priority lanes (on Rocks Rd, Rutherford Rd, and Waimea Rd) to help ease Nelson's traffic congestion issues - ahead of a new inland route or a widening of Rocks Rd to include two lanes each way.

Responders to an NZTA survey have shown a preference for priority lanes (on Rocks Rd, Rutherford Rd, and Waimea Rd) to help ease Nelson's traffic congestion issues - ahead of a new inland route or a widening of Rocks Rd to include two lanes each way.

However, Nelson MP Nick Smith says the survey was a "compromised response", as it was weighted towards people living near the city centre and not people who are also affected but live further afield.

What do you think the best solution is? Vote in our poll and let us know your thoughts in the comments section below.

Another great move will be shown in the Packhouse Cinema at the Mapua Community Hall on Sunday, September 13th at 6:30 pm.

Doors open at 6:15, bring your own nibbles and drinks. Enjoy an early dinner and a drink at the Sprig and Fern opposite the hall before the movie starts, many of us will be there.

IMPORTANT: Due to ongoing alert level two chairs will be set up with the distance required by the governments regulations. If you haven't paid online, please try to bring the exact amount of cash (12 dollars per person). All income will help the hall with ongoing costs during these times of low income.

Tom Hanks absolutely shines as he transforms into the beloved children's show star in a role his career has been perhaps always leading to. Hanks embodies all that is Fred Rogers, from his delicate mannerism to beautifully authentic warmth with others. Hanks pulls at your heartstrings with every word uttered during the film's run.

A Beautiful Day in the Neighbourhood is based on a true life story about the relationship that develops between Fred Rogers and a cynical reporter who is loath to interview him for a piece on American heroes.

In the movie, the reporter is Lloyd Vogel (Matthew Rhys) who gives an amazing performance. Through his interactions with Fred Rogers (Tom Hanks), Vogel begins to understand that part of him is broken. The healing process begins as their friendship develops and you see Fred Rogers teaching him to understand, accept and voice his emotions and feelings. It is beautiful.Tom Hanks is masterful in this role at bringing out the transformation of his friend.

Hi neighbours,

A move to free up more land for new builds is likely to see fewer driveways and garages in modern housing, in a move some say could have New Zealand looking like Coronation Street.

Councils across the country must scrap planning rules that require car parks to be put down near new housing or business developments, under newly released housing guidelines.

The change comes as the Government looks to encourage development, in part by freeing up land held up by car parks, under its new National Policy Statement for urban development.

Property developer Phil Robinson said scrapping car park rules was a “big change”, but he was unsure if it was a “big win”.

What do you think of having more new builds in your area with fewer driveways and garages?

Houses under the current $500,000 cap for existing homes in the region are getting harder to come by, with first home buyers (FHB) facing competition from investors for the properties - which often need work. Do you think FHB should to able to use the grant if they buy homes for over $500,000?

Are schools helping children to learn to read in the best way?

Katy Jones Reporter from The Nelson Mail

Experts are split on how to reverse dropping literacy rates in New Zealand schools. Some say decoding words - systematic phonics - should be the main approach in children in the early years of primary school. Others say it should be one in a range of strategies. What do you think?
