This is your once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to see the Tuia 250 flotilla sail into Waitohi/Picton harbour joined by waka crewed by our local iwi. It will be visible from 10am on Friday, November 22.

Join us in a huge community welcome to the crews from Tahiti, Aotearoa and Australia and stay on for the entertainment and civic welcome by the mayor (12pm to 2pm). Get to the foreshore early to secure a good vantage point.

Join the ukuleles in singing Ko Te Waipounamu:

Ko Te Waipounamu
Maranga mai ki runga
Ē ngā iwi o te motu ē tau nei
Kaua ē tukua
Kei ngaro te whenua
Ē ngā iwi o te motu
Haere mai
Maranga Te Waipounamu
Pōwhiritia ngā iwi
Te reo karanga
Te reo pōwhiri
Ē ngā iwi o te motu
Haere mai

Families are encouraged to take an evening walk along the foreshore to experience a mesmerising 3D light installation projected onto the War Memorial, sponsored by Interislander.

Witness the great battle between Kupe and Te Wheke o Muturangi (the giant octopus) on the waters of Tōtaranui/Queen Charlotte Sound, forming New Zealand’s longest coastline. Watch as the Endeavour circumnavigates Aotearoa, marking the first encounters between Māori and Pākehā.

Switch to LEDs for the climate

Andrew Caseley from Gen Less

Kahutara Primary School in Featherston is switching to LEDs. All LEDs are Gen Less bulbs as they use less energy, which ultimately helps halt climate change. If we all got on board and switched now it would make a huge difference

For the month of November, we want to raise awareness and work together to end all forms of violence including family harm, elder and child abuse, sexual assault, gang violence, and more. These victimisations affect us all and can have lasting effects that spill into our everyday lives including at work and school.

To do your part this month, perhaps consider supporting a women’s refuge or work with Police in your area to host an info night on how to identify elder or child abuse in your community. This month’s campaign also coincides with White Ribbon Day on 25 November which is an internationally celebrated day that aims to prevent violence towards women.

Let us know how you’re spreading the ‘It’s Not OK’ message in your home or in your community by tagging us in your posts + using the following hashtag so we can see what you get up to:

Enthusiastic volunteers are needed for the Tuia 250 commemorations in Picton/Waitohi for the visit of the Dual Heritage Tuia 250 Flotilla, from 22nd November to 25th November.
There are a broad range of roles to be filled: friendly locals are needed to help us manage visitors going on board the Endeavour replica, to check tickets and look after bags, and to be “Ask Me” ambassadors.

People interested in volunteering don't need to have any particular experience or skills, just enthusiasm and commitment. Volunteers will be well looked after and get to be part of Marlborough and Aotearoa’s history!

The council is asking for your help to control the highly invasive pest plant, Chilean Needle Grass.

They suggest that owners of lifestyle blocks, farms and vineyards check their property for infestations by looking out for its purple-tinged, spikey seed heads and its lime green colour. It is a sharp, angular grass, not soft or droopy like most other grasses.

If you think you’ve seen Chilean Needle Grass, please take a photo of it, record the location and email Council at: biosecurity@marlborough.govt.nz
