The event will run from 9am to 7.30pm on Saturday and 9am to 8pm on Sunday and is by appointment only.

It’s a welcome return to New Zealand for the Red Bull Flugtag competition, which last graced our shores in 2004 when it was hosted in Wellington.

The competition will see amateur aviators design, build and then fly contraptions in a bid to be crowned winner.

The thousands of people set to descend upon Wynyard Quarter to see the event are likely to keep business booming for local hospitality hotspots.

In some situations, this is quiet troublesome and often requires urgent attention to be sort. The removal of wisdom teeth is a relatively common procedure performed by qualified and experienced dentists or oral surgeons.

You will require an examination and diagnostic tests such as X-rays or cone beam CBCT scan .

Why do I have to get my wisdom teeth removed?

Your wisdom teeth may be erupting in the wrong direction and orientation, which can damage other teeth or structures in the jaw

Your jaw may be too small to accommodate all your teeth leading to excessive crowding and therefore reducing the chance of your wisdom teeth coming through. We call this impaction— and can be potentially harmful to adjacent bone or teeth

If your wisdom tooth does not fully erupt it makes it more difficult to clean and especially bacteria that can get lodged in, causing infection

Pathology such as a cyst ( fluid-filled sac) may form around the unerupted wisdom tooth, which can lead to infection and injury to the adjacent tissues including nerves, blood vessels and bone.

There are times when it is prudent to have the wisdom teeth removed before symptoms develop. But, as with all medical procedures, its benefits must be weighed against the risks which could include complications. Your dentist would provide more information specific to you.

The Extraction Procedure

The treatment can be done pain free by experienced clinicians possibly with only a local anaesthetic that numbs the area and stops you from experiencing any pain; however often multiple wisdom teeth are being extracted at one visit and other additional options such as sedation or a general anaesthetic may be administers. Your dentist can discuss what type of anaesthesia that's best for you before the procedure.

After the Procedure

The recovery period after wisdom tooth surgery lasts between 1 to 7 days depending on the severity of the procedure and the patient’s own biological and physiological response. During this time, you rest and nutrition is advised to encourage healing. Taking regular pain medication as prescribed. It's normal to experience some bleeding the surgical site. However soon after the surgery this is usually controlled by apply gentle pressure by biting with guaze pads and avoiding rinsing or spitting. Also lying with the head elevated rather than flat. In the first 24 hours after the procedure the use of ice packs on the side of the cheek of the procedure for a few minutes at a time may help reduce swelling. Rinsing the mouth with warm salt water several times a day can also help relieve discomfort and keep the wounds clean.

You should keep up with nutrition and eat soft foods for a few days after the extraction and then progress to a normal diet as tolerated.

Continue brushing carefully and follow up with your dentist is important if there are any concerns.

The drink is the main solution to satisfy thirst whether it is coffee juice, wine or water.

Despite the satisfaction, it leaves you, have you ever thought it can damage your teeth?

Here are some facts you may want to consider when choosing your drink.

Wine - Wines are acidic and some of it contains high sugar level which causes potential damage on the enamel of the tooth.

Water is the safest drink you can have. Proper hydration can stimulate saliva production which prevents tooth decay. Coffee. Anything in excess can harm your teeth. One cup of coffee a day will not cause any harm to your teeth provided it’s sugar-free.

Milk is not just good for your bones, it’s also good for your teeth. It is full of vitamins and minerals that can make your teeth strong and prevent them from decaying.

Fruit juice. Commercial fruit juice is usually acidic and high in sugar which can potentially damage your tooth enamel. Try to limit your consumption or you can dilute a concentrated juice to lessen its impact on your teeth.

Whilst most dental clinics are closed during the Covid-19 related lockdown our oral health care providers are challenged to meet the demands of emergency dental services during the COVID-19 pandemic.

We are trying to make phone contact and triaging our patients and if possibly delaying the need for treatment unless urgent or emergency dental treatment.

What is “urgent care” and “emergency” dental treatment?

Patients should have access to dental emergency triage and advice via telephone and should only be seen in person if their pain cannot be controlled by medication, or if they have orofacial trauma requiring urgent management.

“Urgent care” includes treatment for:

• dental or soft-tissue infections without a systemic effect
• severe pain that cannot be controlled by medication or the patient following self-help advice
• fractured teeth or pulpal exposure
• adjustment or repair of dental appliances where patient health is significantly impacted.

“Dental emergencies” include:

• trauma-including facial/oral laceration and/or dentoalveolar injuries, such as avulsion of a permanent tooth
• oro-facial swelling that is serious and worsening
• post-extraction bleeding that the patient is not able to control with local measures
• dental conditions that have resulted in acute systemic illness or raised temperature as a result of dental infection
• severe trismus
• acute infections that are likely to exacerbate systemic medical conditions such as diabetes.

We take pride in our infectious controls.

We have personal protective equipment. Items used for emergency care:

N95/FFP2 masks
Surgical masks
Face shields
Gowns
Gloves
Hand sanitizer
