On Friday 27 November, Discovery School again hosted the Rotary Primary schools speech contest, and a very fine and popular event it turned out to be.

The nine schools in the Paramoana cluster take part in the contest, and they take things very seriously. Students first have to win their own school’s internal competition before they go forward to the main contest.

All the entrants demonstrated that they had been well-coached in speaking, and had rehearsed their presentations carefully. Some were delivered without the use of notes.

The self-chosen topics varied widely, from the frivolous to the serious. The pitfalls of social media featured, as did other issues which concern pre-teens.

The prize-winners were James Morahan of Plimmerton School, for a comical talk about cookies (the edible sort), and Ronin Herd of Papakowhai School, who explored the belief that the earth is flat.

The event was organised and chaired by Sarah Jenner, teacher at Discovery, but David Knight was again busy behind the scenes, providing the trophies and certificates and support to Sarah. Philip Reidy created the handsome certificates. President Bill McAulay spoke for the club, and Wendy Betteridge and David Pine were on the judging panel.

Our club has sponsored this contest since 2003. It is a friendly event which needs little funding by the club and does much for our prestige in the area. About ten club members were able to attend, and the contestants were well supported by teachers, parents and siblings.

Summer is a great time to spend time away - but it's not so great when you have to share a tent or room with someone who snores. Stop the complaints from friends and family by getting fitted for a Snorex.

Snorex is a custom made anti-snoring device. Fitting over the top and bottom teeth and made of a soft plastic, the Snorex is discreet and easy to travel with - no bulky masks or machines. It works by holding the jaw forward, opening up the airway and stopping snoring. Made in Stokes Valley for 25 years, each Snorex is custom fitted for comfort and efficacy.

Being custom made it does take time to complete each Snorex, but booking a fitting in before Christmas means that in January you can start having years of snore-free nights.

For more information, or to check available dates for an appointment, go to www.snorex.co.nz or call 0800 766 739

"Pretty rapt to see a clutch of oystercatcher, chicks and their parents, on Wellington's coast tonight. The adult birds were back from last year, and have three young ones in tow.
The adult bird had just caught a worm and the competition was on, as to which bird would get a feed. The bird at the back is the runt, and was also the chick that was attacked by gulls.
It was also the chick that was not in any way defended by the parent birds, while the other two birds were well cared for. You certainly know which chick is the runt, when it runs only metres away from you, after being chased by a gull, and neither of the parent birds felt the inclination to attack me!
Life is cruel for a baby oystercatcher, however if you are the runt of the clutch, life is really hard!"

Flooding Update from Porirua Mayor Anita Baker.
Fortunately, Plimmerton didn’t have any major issues overnight that we’re aware of.
There was some rain, but nowhere close to the extent we had on Sunday.
Council, Downer and Wellington Water had done lots of work in preparation for the rain, and Wellington Water had pumps at two locations on Karehana Stream which were effective.
There was, however, a landslip in Whitby, which has damaged two properties.
Residents were safely evacuated by Fire and Emergency from one, and the other was unoccupied. The properties were cordoned off and security put in place.
We’ll have crews out around the city this morning to assess whether there has been other damage across the city, and we’ll continue to work with affected residents.
On Monday we carried out around 100 needs assessments. 30 require non-urgent follow up and 9 need urgent follow up. We’re assisting one family with accommodation.
PCC Parks crews removed 20 truckloads of silt and mud yesterday. Today (Tuesday) we will be putting skips around affected areas to assist residents with clean-up Brendon from trash palace has said if anyone from Plimmerton or other parts of the city who have been flooded need anything like clothing or other items, then trash palace is happy to donate to them to help out.
