Wellington’s sprinkler ban has been lifted– but with sporadic rain forecast for winter residents still need to avoid wasting water.
The restrictions were put in place for the Hutt Valley, South Wairarapa, Wellington city and Porirua in mid-February as water usage soared during the summer months.
From Tuesday, residents in Lower Hutt, Porirua and Wellington city can again use sprinklers and irrigation systems, Wellington Water said. In Upper Hutt and South Wairarapa people can do so every second day, as is usual.
Most of the Wellington region’s drinking water comes from rivers and the Waiwhetu aquifer under the Hutt Valley. River levels fell to 90 per cent before the sprinkler ban.
Meanwhile, people in the Wairarapa town of Carterton still have to boil their water after E. coli bacteria was found in the water supply on March 12.

"It's often as hard to get one of these sitting down as it is to get one in flight. Welcome swallow/warou (Hirundo neoxena). The pink background is caused by the colourful pink aquatic weeds on the fresh water pond at Pauatahanui. Usually hawking in a circuit over the pond, one of the swallows rested briefly to have a good stretch on a stick poking out of the water."

Hi neighbours,

Should pokie machines be outlawed?

A city councillor has put forward a policy to ban new permits for pokie machines in Wellington City.

Councillor Tamatha Paul, representing the Lambton Ward, is pushing for a 'sinking lid' policy to all but cease new permits for pokie machines in the city. The motion has widespread support across the council table and is set to pass this Thursday.

New Zealanders lost $939 million in pokie machines in 2019 and $241m of that was paid out to community and sports groups. Between 30 and 60 per cent of money going into pokie machines was from problem gamblers and much of that came from low socio-economic communities, a paper by the Problem Gambling Foundation said.

Porirua could one day have high density residential housing, six storeys high.
The zone request from the Crown’s public housing agency was made when the council sought public feedback on the city’s proposed District Plan last year.
However, details of the request only came to light in a public notice in Tuesday’s Dominion Post, summarising requests made during the District Plan submissions process, and asking for further submissions from the public.
What do you think of the prospect of having multi storey apartments in Porirua.

Porirua residents are spoiled for choice when it comes to attending an Anzac Day service.
Since 1916, services have been held around the country to mark the landing of Australian and New Zealand soldiers at Gallipoli in Turkey on 25 April 1915, acknowledging the sacrifices and hardships made there and in subsequent conflicts around the world in the name of freedom.
In Porirua this year there will be dawn services from 6am at the Porirua RSA in McKillop St and the north end of Titahi Bay Beach, the latter hosted by Titahi Bay RSA near the old gun emplacement on the access road to the beach.
In the city centre, the civic service begins at 9am (live streamed on Facebook from 8.45am) and concludes at 10am. This is available for anyone in the city to attend, with morning tea in Te Rauparaha Arena afterwards.
Other services in the city, include
- St Alban’s Church, Pāuatahanui, 10.15am;
- Takapūwāhia Marae, 10.30am;
- Pukerua Bay Community Hall, 11am, followed by a wreath-laying ceremony at Whenua Tapu Cemetery at noon.

The development of Te Whare Rānui will enable us to better meet the growing and diverse needs of people in this community facing a terminal illness. While raising this money this is a big challenge, we know how generous the Porirua community has been for Mary Potter Hospice in the past. Please contribute what you can to support Mary Potter Hospice – every donation counts, and we are grateful for all your gifts.
