"When I was young I didn’t like the boatsheds. To my eye they looked derelict and unkempt – a hotchpotch of too bright clashing colours, and all of them peeling to reveal bleached wood underneath. They reminded me of my Nana’s crocheted rugs with frayed threads and darned patches. I liked things shining, new, and squared away. Anything else smacked of some sort of failure, either of duty or poverty.
Now that I’m older, and not untouched by time myself, I realise that decay is inevitable, and, more importantly, there is texture and beauty in it. The sea, like life, can be a rough place. The winds carry salt and sand, storm surges leave marks and baggage piled around the high tide mark, sometimes spilling over onto the little docks. But in this flotsam, rotting seaweed, silt, and tangled tree branches are a million little bugs, fish, and crabs – a roiling primordial soup seasoned with iodine and salt and feasted on by the birds. Nothing is lost - just transformed. Sacred kingfisher/kōtare (Todiramphus sanctus) catching the light at the Hutt Estuary boatsheds, Hikoikoi Reserve, Lower Hutt."

Community input is being sought on a series of road and safety improvements planned for the northern Kenepuru area, Porirua.
Porirua Mayor Anita Baker welcomed the improvements designed to help manage the traffic growth anticipated from the opening of Transmission Gully and from other developments in the area.
"These initiatives will make it easier and safer for vehicles, pedestrians and cyclists to access businesses, Kenepuru Landing, Summerset Retirement Village, Bishop Viard College and the city centre," she said.
A drop-in session will be held on Thursday 15 July between 5pm - 7pm, at the Seventh-day Adventist Church, 16 Kenepuru Drive. The main projects up for discussion are:
* Kenepuru Drive new intersections with Lyttelton Ave and Lower Main Drive
* Lower Main Drive to Ferry Place footpath (including the Lyttelton Ave/Walton Leigh Ave intersection upgrade)

It’s taken more than 20 years, but Te Ara Piko is finally the finished product.

The 5.25km pathway around the northern side of the spectacular Pāuatahanui Inlet was pitched to Council in 1999 by members of the Rotary Club of Plimmerton.

The first turf was turned in 2005 and an official blessing and opening was held last week on 28 June at Motukaraka Point to recognise its completion. Porirua mayor Anita Baker said the tireless fundraising by Plimmerton Rotary – it contributed $1.3m towards the project – has created a much-loved walkway that will be enjoyed for generations to come.

Along with Rotary, Mayor Baker acknowledged Ngāti Toa for its continual support, contractors Fulton Hogan, consultants Tonkin & Taylor, DoC, Forest & Bird and the input of the organisations that have the best interests of the inlet at heart – Guardians of Pāuatahanui Inlet and Porirua Harbour & Catchment Community Trust. Current president of the Rotary Club of Plimmerton, Bill McAulay, said it was a brilliant achievement for the club.

Usage of Te Ara Piko was just over 64,000 in 2020, with the number of users growing each year as parts of the pathway were completed. It runs from Taylor Stace Cottage in Pāuatahanui to Camborne Walkway carpark.

Bill Gebbie can't stand the thought of children being cold over winter.
So the 68 year-old Porirua pensioner has joined the growing number of older New Zealanders donating to “Share My Super”.
The non-profit service helps Kiwis over 65 donate to a range of charities by giving all, or part, of their superannuation payment to a charity.
A former civil servant, Gebbie shares his super with the Wellington City Mission and KidsCan. With the polar blast that just hit the Wellington region, he says it’s good to support charities that help keep children warm and safe.
