I'm working on a travel story for Stuff about the things that have surprised returning Kiwis about New Zealand. If you have recently returned from overseas or know someone who has, it would be great to hear about the things that have stood out for you, for better or for worse. Whether it's to do with the weather, the cost of things, the public transport, the food, the housing, the people or something else entirely, we'd be keen to hear about it. Please remember that your comment may be included in the article, unless you say you don't want it to be. Thank you.

"My neighbour Ann, a retired special ed teacher, goes the extra mile for her community. On her neighbourhood walks she notices blocked drains, or dangerous pavements on school routes and spends time phoning the Council to get them fixed. She is part of a local group that petitioned for new school crossings on Takanini School Road. She volunteers at the local school for free maths tuition. She sets a really great example of looking out for her community and makes the world a better place."

About 10 years old, $1500 new; has been in storage. Confirmed the 4 igniters and electric element work fine. I'm not 100% certain but I'm fairly sure it is set up for street gas supply (i.e. not LPG bottles, which would require a set of different injector parts, available from ILVE). Comes with a bag of scoria stones for the barbecue unit. Medium hob cap and knob handle missing; can be replaced cheaply enough by phoning an ILVE dealer (e.g. Harvey Norman) or a good gasfitter/plumber.
Price: $50

Free 3-piece lounge suite. A two and a three seater sofa, and a chair. Green, corduroy-ish fabric. A bit worn in places but still presentable, would suit a student flat, rumpus room, or a recover project. I really don't want to have to take them to the tip, but I've run out of room :-(

He sculpted, molded and cast the whole thing by hand, with just trial and error to guide him. How cool is that? I found it so inspiring. Chatting to him made me want to give it a go myself. I reckon I might start with something a little simpler first, however. Those Acanthus leaves look so good... but also quite difficult! Maybe an art deco rose, to match my 30s house? Anyway, I'd love to hear from anyone else whose created something lovely for their homes from scratch. Drop me a line and let me know what DIY magic you've been up to!
