A school is closed, slips have blocked roads and rockfall has struck a car after heavy rain in the Wellington region on Thursday morning.
Paremata School has been closed until further notice after sewage flooded into the playground, a staff member said.
The flooding had subsided and the rain had eased by about 10.30am, but the school remains closed to pupils as the toilets aren’t working.
Wellington Water, council and Downer crews were out this morning in Plimmerton, Titahi Bay, Elsdon, Cannons Creek and Whitby, a Porirua City Council spokesman said.

The first meeting to be streamed, will feature the Council’s main committee, Te Puna Kōrero. During the Covid-19 lockdown, the Council streamed two meetings and decided to look into making this permanent. Porirua Mayor Anita Baker says this tool of engagement has been investigated before and now the time is right, as many in our community have requested the ability to hear and see what elected members are talking about without being there in person. It involved upgrading technology in the Council chamber, with a camera to track whomever is speaking, along with high-quality microphones in front of each person.

The 10 December Te Puna Kōrero meeting starts at 8.30am. Go to the meetings page on our website and click ‘watch now’ to go through to the YouTube page

Enjoy the very best of locally-made crafts, artisan food, and refreshments in a lovely rural setting at the Eat Drink and Be Crafty Fair. There will also be a live band and plenty of entertainment for all ages – it’s sure to be a great family day out for everyone.
Cell phone coverage in the area of Battle Hill is patchy which in turn means coverage for Eftpos machines can be a problem. In the past, cash has proved to be the most reliable means for transactions. There will be a limited Eftpos facility on the day supplying cash.

The proceeds from the day will support Wellington Free Ambulance and local Porirua Community Charities.

Where: Greater Wellington’s Battle Hill Farm Forest Park, 608 Paekakariki Hill Road, Porirua, Wellington

Admission: Gold coin donation

As the Government moves to double employees' sick leave entitlements, a man is calling for a law change to go even further – and allow workers to take a paid day off on their birthday.
When Clifford Hallett blows out the candles on his cake in a couple of weeks, he'll likely wish for an extra leave day to celebrate.
Hallett has launched a petition to Parliament requesting it pass legislation to give all employees that right.

Tell us what you think.

The old building had given more than 50 years service but was well past its best.
Kāpiti Mana Area Commander, Inspector Tracey Thompson said it was not a good building to work in.
“Our pots [were] on the floor because there were holes in the roof. It didn’t smell that nice at times, [it was] cold in the winter, hot in the summer."
Among the first people to visit the facility were representatives of Ngāti Toa Rangatira who blessed the new facility last Thursday.
The iwi also gifted the names of seven rooms, including Whakatau Mai (reception), Te Wāhi Hapori (community room), Taua Nei Kōrero (interview rooms), Kai Tāhi (cafeteria), Te Wāhi Whakataa (wellness room) and the executive meeting room, Kāpiti ki Pōneke.
Signs in the new police facility were bilingual, reflecting the close relationship police had with local Māori.

"I am a special dude who has had an unusual start to my rehoming journey. I am completely deaf but that doesn't stop me having a great time! I am a fun, loveable, boy who has stolen the hearts of everyone at the centre. I am looking for an experienced owner, who has a suitable property for me to thrive in. I'm always up for a walk or a game to play, and I love to find things to do and keep active. I am looking for a home with teenagers or adults, and a home without cats or small animals. I am happy to play with other active dogs, and love to be social with both people and dogs. If you are interested in me and my goofy personality - chat to the canine team."
