A new email scam impersonating the NZTA is being sent around telling vehicle owners their licences are due.

The email directs the recipient to renew the funds through clicking a 'Renew Now' button at the bottom corner of the email. It then takes the individual to fake website that gets them to fill in personal details.

CERT NZ, the government authority responsible for cyber security said in a tweet, that anyone who receives this email should report it directly to Waka Kotahi (NZTA).

How to spot a phishing scam:
- NZTA will only send an email through if an individual has contacted them first.
- Email addresses will always end in @nzta.govt.nz, @enews.nzta.govt.nz or @reply.nzta.govt.nz.
- The email may be missing specific details that the NZTA will have on file: such as your plate number, the date your vehicle license is due and vehicle make and model.
- Hover over buttons and links to see if the pop-up will take you to a genuine government (.govt.nz) website

Neighbourly will update this message as further information comes to hand.

Hi neighbours,

Three tools have been trialled or used by Police to search publicly available information during investigations, but they will not reveal which ones.

Some of these have sparked controversy overseas, including one tool that was used to track Black Lives Matter protesters or monitor electronic chatter.

Police Commissioner Andrew Coster has defended using these digital tools, and faced criticism for it, with digital rights groups worried online surveillance is escalating.

Auckland technologist Andrew Chen has argued police need to more transparent when deploying a tool and its justification.

Police said the 2020 stocktake was a "snapshot" only and was only revealing what it could to build public confidence.

"Thanks to a wonderful husband who took me there and a low tide, Pāuatahanui was a bird photographer's dream this afternoon! Masses of kingfishers who were either sitting on bits of driftwood or logs, in between catching little crabs, a pile of shags who were in a very flappy mood and were constantly splashing about in the water, a pair of Caspian terns who didn't seem to be getting on too well, a blue heron who was getting annoyed by a seagull who was swooping over him. So much to see and photograph! It helped wearing some wellies so I could wade in to get some closer shots."

It was all executed magnificently. Dinner, with accompanying haggis, over, Graham Wallace spoke eloquently about some of Robbie Burns' history and proposed a toast to his memory, Graeme Blick proposed a toast to the lassies, and Kay Phillips to the laddies. Bryan Waddle added his voice to the celebrations and Philip Whearty proposed the thanks. The speakers were magnificent and very entertaining and their offerings will appear in a future Update, as will the many photos that were taken on the night.
But wait, there's more ... Speeches over, Marion took up her bagpipes again and played some Scottish tunes while members danced the Waltz and the Gay Gordons. The evening finished with a rousing rendering of Auld Lang Syne. For those who need a translation - and there were very many occasions during the evening when many members did! - the phrase translates literally to 'old long since' in English and means something akin to 'times gone by'.

"I am a sweet dog looking for my forever home. I am looking for a very special home that can understand my quirks and needs, a home that can help me thrive and be the best companion I can be.
My ideal home would be one that has had previous large dog experience and/or greyhound experience. I walk beautifully on a lead but in saying that, I would need a home that can handle me as I can be strong when I want. I have had a fair amount of training from my previous home but there is always room for more growth. I am super smart and a lover of all yummy foods so will pick up new things very quickly.
I can be shy when meeting new people so I would love a quiet patient home that can read when I am not comfortable. A home with no children would be best for me. Being part greyhound, I am also not suited to a home with cats or any small animals. If you think you are the home for me contact SPCA’s Canine Team for more information."

The Porirua Council is urging people to support Grant Monos. He has been a long-time member of council’s litter and maintenance team and he's constantly picking up rubbish out of the waterways.
As part of a litter monitoring programme, a cleanup two weeks ago by volunteers collected 1163 items of rubbish in just a few hours, 88 per cent of which was plastic.
Things like food wrappers, drink lids, pens, shoes and even part of a plastic Christmas tree were found, all having the potential for negative effects on birds and sea life. .
