Jo and Rachel talked about what's going on in their own backyards and suggested some edible crops you can sow and grow yourself. Jo gave a masterclass in planting tomatoes, the pair discussed peeing on lemon trees and keeping cats out of your vege beds, and Rachel talked to a Central Otago gardener who has to deal with extreme temperatures, extreme drought... and temperamental donkeys. You can also follow the conversation on Spotify and Stitcher. Let your friends know too!

We adopted Oscar (de-sexed, vaccinated, worm/flea treated) from an animal shelter because we needed a companion for our very playful kitten. Oscar stood out as he was very friendly and playful, as soon as we met him. He continues being extremely cuddly and smoochy with strangers, and is loved by every visitor we get.
He’s low maintenance in the sense he doesn’t meow much and is independent. Still, he seeks out a good cuddle for about an hour a day, purrs loudly when you pat him and joins you in bed sometimes. He takes a while to settle, but has been known to sleep in our arms!
The shelter told us he was 3 months old, so now he should be about 7 months but we're not so sure since he's not very playful. We still have to spend hours playing with our other kitten to make up for his docility. We’ve not needed to see a vet with him and he looks healthy (been raised on Hills and Royal Canin diet).
It took a lot of research and problem-solving before we decided to surrender Osky. We love him and it breaks our hearts that he doesn’t fit in with our family, and we're not allowed to keep more than 2 pets.
Oscar does play with his humans, usually when he sees us playing with the other cat and doesn’t want to be left out. He likes to dominate our other cat, and may play too rough as she often hisses, growls and we found some small wounds. We think he would be best as a solo cat.
While he uses the litter perfectly, we think Oscar spent his early days outdoors, as he’s confused about common domestic cat behaviours. He has a tendency to scratch carpets and sofas, which we mitigated by building him a tall sturdy tree-post that can be yours for free with his adoption. Oscar would be very suitable for a busy person/family who can let him roam outside.
He vomits on occasion – we think he may be eating too fast when our other cat is around. We’re looking at making a food dispenser that he has to work at so he can slow down. A commercial one could solve the problem as well. The shelter we got him from had him returned before, without knowing why, so we are fearful to give him back.
We feel much more comfortable knowing he went to a loving home who knows about his idiosyncrasies but for whom he’s a good fit.

Several weeks ago Wellington Water ran a trial to prepare for installing a new valve, which involved shutting off normal water supply to Wellington City for a few hours. This was to confirm that under normal demand, we’d have enough water available to allow us to drain the pipes, cut them open, install the new valves, seal everything up, and recharge the network (estimated at 15 hours).
The trial was successful – and we are planning another shutoff to complete this work tomorrow, Wednesday 6 November starting at 6am.
While we’re not expecting any outages as a result of this work, we do ask that residents are mindful of their water use.
Throughout the work, we’ll be monitoring supply and demand closely, and will inform residents on any potential supply interruptions.
