Porirua City Council cemetery staff need your help keeping Whenua Tapu Cemetery tidy to show respect to the more than 10,000 people who call it their final resting place.
Bottles and glass vases are regularly broken and end up strewn on the grass, acting parks operations manager Mark Hammond says.
"Our staff do their best to respect and look after ornaments, keepsakes, flowers and other items by placing them back where we believe they’ve come from, but it is often difficult to work out where," he says.
"Flowers, bottles and other ornaments can get caught by mowers and line trimmers, making it not only a safety issue for staff but also it’s heart-breaking to be taking so many items to the skip. We need to keep Whenua Tapu tidy for the whole community to enjoy when they visit."
Some of the lighter items, like plastic flowers, can end up in streams and in Taupō Swamp, making them hazardous to birdlife and our natural environment.
If you want to learn more about the best ways you can ensure your loved ones’ tributes are looked after and stay put, come along to our Whenua Tapu open day on Saturday 7 November from 12-2pm.

Yes, another one… but this one is special: it’s a falls prevention exercise class for seniors, and it only costs a gold coin. Age Concern Wellington’s Ann Dalziel has started three new weekly classes in Lower Hutt (Knox Church), Khandallah (St Barnabas Church), and Churton Park (community centre). Age Concern Wellington now has 25 Steady as You Go exercise classes running each week around the Wellington Region. From Upper Hutt to Island Bay and over to Whitby, there’s a class near you.

“My balance has improved so much,” says one class participant, “and I’ve made many new friends here.”

These classes are designed to improve strength and balance and help prevent a fall. Steady as You Go classes improve balance and leg strength, flexibility, general fitness, and wellbeing. But most importantly perhaps, these classes are a great way to meet new people.

Classes consist of a combination of sitting, standing and walking exercises, and take around an hour. Call 04 499 6648 or visit www.ageconcernwellington.org.nz... for more information.

Falls are not a natural part of ageing!

Clay class at Fig Tree Studio
Join me to create a red earthenware forest guardian wall hanging, inspired by the Celtic Green Man and Women. These can be hung in your garden or home, where ever you'd like a bit of magic.
We will use my own templates and imprint with leaves and fabric to create the textures on the face. This is a fun activity which looks super and is achievable even if this is your first time using clay. Suitable for complete beginners or experienced.

These will be unglazed and fired to earthenware temperature to allow the deep terracotta colour to develop. All materials are provided so all you need to do is just turn up ready to have some fun and creativity. Warming herbal teas, and nibbles will be available.

Booking essential, contact clpates@hotmail.com or text 021 143 7705
$50 per person:
Includes all materials, kiln firing and nibbles
7pm- 9:30pm
Thursday 12 November
Completed pieces are ready to collect 4 weeks after class to allow time for firing.

Price: $50
