Signing up only takes 2 minutes and when you do, you’ll be entered to win a personal emergency grab bag or civil defence wheelie bin kit from NZ Civil Defence.
ShakeOut takes place around the world to remind people of the right action to take during an earthquake:
DROP - down on your hands and knees. This protects you from falling but lets you move if you need to.
COVER - your head and neck (or entire body if possible) under a sturdy table or desk (if it is within a few steps of you). If there is no shelter nearby, cover your head and neck with your arms and hands.
HOLD - on to your shelter (or your position to protect your head and neck) until the shaking stops. If the shaking shifts your shelter around, move with it.

Forty-thousands of books for sale!
Much to Lions’ relief, 40,000 donated books will be taken out of storage on October 14 and set up in the Waikanae Memorial Hall in readiness for the 24th consecutive Lions Monster Bookfair on Saturday and Sunday, the 16th and 17th October.
Project manager Peter Cresswell said months of work is nearing its end for Lions after uncertainty as to whether Covid19 restrictions may have forced a cancellation.
“So, it is with a huge sigh of relief that we are able to proceed although under Level 2 conditions. We will be using the usual large Waikanae Memorial hall’s main room plus the smaller room normally used for priced books. There will be door controls to maintain the 100-person limits and as customer depart, more will be allowed in. Face masks must be worn and there will be fewer tables to allow for the required health distancing.
In spite of the Covid restrictions we hope once again to raise close to $40,000 for Kapiti’s needy organisations. This could bring the total raised by the Bookfair since its inception, to more than three-quarters of a million dollars!
The two days of the Combined Lions Monster Bookfair usually sees people from throughout the region congregating, even before the doors open at 8am on the Saturday. “As always the range and quantity of books for sale is ‘mind-blowing’ and there are titles to suit everyone.”
The Bookfair is all for great causes, says Cresswell. “The money raised will go the Special Olympics Kapiti, Birthright Kapiti, Kapiti Women’s Refuge, Whale Song Kapiti Coast, Wellington Children’s Hospital Playground Project, Paraparumu Foodbank and the Cancer Society.”

I am a sweet dog looking for my forever home. I am looking for a very special home that can understand my quirks and needs. A home that can help me thrive and be the best companion I can be. My ideal home would be one that has had previous large dog experience and or greyhound. I walk beautifully on a lead but in saying that I would need a home that can handle me as I can be strong when I want. I have had a fair amount of training from my previous home but there is always room for more growth. I am super smart and a lover of all yummy foods so will pick up new things very quickly. I can be shy when meeting new people so I would love a quiet patient home that can read when I am not comfortable. A home with no children. I could live with an older settled male dog but in saying this I am used to having my own space. I am not suited to a home with cats or any small animals."

Dozens of community volunteers joined Word Wide Fund for Nature and Porirua City Council staff to plant native trees and plants below Kenepuru Drive. The school holidays brought a number of children with their families down to help, in warm and overcast weather.
Carex, flax, toitoi, lemonwoods and other plants were put in the ground as part of Project #ReBlossomNZ, a collaboration led by Botanica by Air Wick and WWF, working with Ngāti Toa and Porirua, Wellington City, and the regional councils.
All up, about 6600 plants have gone in to provide shade and help prevent pollutants from the nearby roads and state highways enter the stream, which flows into the harbour. The stream supports six species of native fish: longfin and shortfin eels, giant kōkopu, inanga, redfin, and common bullies.
Porirua Mayor Anita Baker said it was great to see the turnout last week and was confident of continuous community involvement.
While the recent lockdown and current alert levels curtailed some public participation, there will be ample opportunities in the coming five years for people to get their hands in the soil.
“We’ve set aside $600,000 for riparian planting in our recent Long-term Plan, so this is important for our Council and our city,” Mayor Baker said.
“These plantings are a big step towards rejuvenating our precious harbour and, with many more harbour-related projects in the pipeline, I’m sure the community will help us along the journey.”
Ngāti Toa Treaty and Strategic Relationships General Manager Naomi Solomon acknowledged the significance of the waterway to Ngāti Toa, having historically been used for mahinga kai (food gathering areas).
“The collective planting efforts will go far in providing protection for the stream bed and raising awareness in the community around kaitiakitanga of our natural environment,” she said.
