Are you a fan of fast fashion?

Kelly Dennett Reporter from Sunday Star Times

Many of us grew up flocking to Glassons, Hallenstein's, Cotton On and Just Jeans for our hardy perennials - jeans, t-shirts, summer dresses - and some of us still do.

Many of us grew up flocking to Glassons, Hallenstein's, Cotton On and Just Jeans for our hardy perennials - jeans, t-shirts, summer dresses - and some of us still do.

But we're increasingly becoming aware that buying a $20 t-shirt that won't last the distance isn't that great for the environment.

While some of us are pledging to only buy second hand or to invest in statement pieces - more expensive items that will last a long time- not all of us have that luxury.

We're wanting to speak to someone who isn't giving up their fast fashion any time soon, whether it's for economic or style reasons, personal choice or indifference to the environment. Maybe you're a student who likes the choice chain store fashion brings, or perhaps you're a parent whose children are growing too fast to risk splashing out on expensive clothing.

If this sounds like you, please email kelly.dennett@stuff.co.nz.

We are especially keen for you to come along if you are an alto or bass.

The first year was amazing, with 15 public performances, lots of fun, numerous standing ovations, and fantastic music throughout. If you have ever thought of singing with a group of highly talented and supportive individuals, this is the choir for you! And we have another year of terrific music and opportunities already lined up.

Rehearsals are on Wednesday evenings, and location is Mana (Porirua), very convenient to everywhere, with good public transportation and parking. Music director is Eric Sidoti, who also directs the Kapiti Chorale, Hutt Valley Gang Show, and St John’s choir on Willis Street, and formerly directed the Kapiti Chamber Choir and the Wainuiomata Choir. And we have the fabulous Jennifer Scarlet as our regular accompanist. Voices in the Wind cover a huge range of repertoire at a high quality level, yet we ensure that we are accessible to both singers and audiences alike. Fun and fellowship are both in abundant supply.

To sign up for auditions (rehearsals begin on 12 February), please contact our membership secretary Linda van Milligan at lindavanmilligan@gmail.com. If neither of the audition dates are suitable for you, contact us anyway and we can work out an alternative date for an audition. Give it a go – you will only regret it if you don’t!

We are a community committee tasked with making recommendations to Greater Wellington Regional Council and our city councils on the future of water quality and its use in Wellington, Upper Hutt and Lower Hutt (our Whaitua). Our waterways are precious and our water networks (freshwater, wastewater and stormwater) are vital for our community’s wellbeing. Recently, we have been learning about the state of water in our area and gathering community input on how water is valued and what should be done to look after it.

I live with my family beside the Makara Stream and we follow its path each day, winding from the beach up toward the headwaters above Makara Village or Ohariu. Our rural communities value their waterways and we want their input on how to best achieve reductions of sediment and pathogens in our rural areas. In town, there is a huge job ahead in upgrading the piped water networks and lessening our three cities’ impact on water quality - while also planning for population growth. Our region must meet national water quality requirements within a few years so we want to find solutions that reflect our communities’ views and are informed by good evidence and information.

Get in touch with us to give us your thoughts. You can reach us at whaitua@gw.govt.nz. To see what we have been doing visit our Facebook page. To share what you value about our water and your solutions, have your say here.

By making sure each electorate has about the same number of people, we can give all New Zealanders equal representation in Parliament. It’s all balance.
If we move one of your electorate boundaries, you could end up in a different electorate to the one you’re in now – so we show you what we’re proposing before we make any changes and give you the opportunity to share your thoughts.
