But while the Government says there are no plans for such a facility, it hasn’t ruled it out. Michael Baker, an epidemiologist at the University of Otago, said New Zealand was world-leading in biosecurity, but needed to invest in human biosecurity.
“Now we have to talk long-term about this,” he said.

There are daily free concerts at Pātaka, featuring a wide range of acclaimed Māori artists, and the central library will host bilingual story time for our tamariki. "Porirua is a proud kaitiaki of our Māori legacy," says Porirua Mayor Anita Baker.
The concerts will be livestreamed on the Council’s Facebook page so they can be enjoyed by more people. Tamariki can listen to stories online on the Library’s Children’s Chat Facebook group, on Wednesday and Friday at 10.45am.
Mayor Baker is encouraging everyone to make te reo Māori a part of their everyday life. "One of my favourite proverbs says ‘mai i te kōpae ki te urupa, tātou ako tonu ai’ which translates to ‘from the cradle to the grave we are forever learning’.

What you need to know:
- Book a WoF as soon as possible with your local mechanics to avoid delay.
- In a statement, MTA reported that there here may be a higher fail rate with some vehicles not been checked for over 12 months.
- Other documents with temporary extensions: CoFs, regos, vehicle certifications, and driver licenses.
- MTA reports that a total of 1.62 million inspections need to be completed between now and October 31.

A survey of employed people in the June 2020 quarter showed seven percent felt there was a high or almost certain chance of losing their job or business within the next 12 months. At a national level this represented 185,000 workers. A further 18 percent (468,000) felt there was a medium chance, while 4 percent (105,000) stated they did not know what their job security was going to be over the following year.
Most people surveyed said there was little or no chance of losing their job or business (71 percent or 1,859,000).

The meeting was well-attended with many partners and guests keen to hear Dr Tan’s fascinating story.
Our club has supported Dr Tan’s work in the past and members have visited his Research Institute, the Gilies McIndoe.
The Gillies McIndoe Institute is now well staffed and established in its new premises in Newtown.
Dr Tan’s original calling was in Plastic Surgery and he became interested in strawberry birthmarks, which gave an insight into cancer and other disfiguring conditions.
Its research outputs are impressive with seven patents, and numerous journal papers, book chapters, and conference addresses.
As we know, cancer is a major health issue and it is getting worse because the population is aging. Treatments are often nasty and may be very expensive.
Currently, there is a focus at the Institute on cancer stem cells, which are the most malignant cells appearing in a cancer. It may be possible to treat these using common and off-patent medications.
This has also led to the Institute’s interest in repurposing existing medication for other conditions too, and may yet provide an answer to Covid-19.
As always, research funding is scarce and may be more difficult to obtain if the work is based around a new paradigm.
This was a most interesting address, although at times rather technical, and the audience was deeply absorbed in what Dr Tan had to say.
