This month, recycling ambassadors have been out around the city on recycling days in their electric vehicle. During the first two weeks of inspections, four collection days exceeded the 14 per cent contamination threshold, meaning that recycling load must go to the landfill. The highest day of contamination was 33 per cent.
So far a total of 3773 bins have been inspected and 13 per cent of those were contaminated.
The recycling ambassadors will continue to check recycling as the start of Porirua’s 3-Strikes Process nears on 28 February – once this begins, if we find non-recyclable or contaminated items in your bin, you’ll get a warning sticker. If you receive two warning stickers and a red card, you could lose your bin.
The main problem reported by the ambassadors is general household rubbish all mixed in together, Porirua’s Manager Water & Waste, David Down, said. “Nearly two-thirds of the contaminated recycling bins found during the audit so far has general household items in it, such as takeaway and coffee containers, polystyrene, plastic food containers, dirty nappies, tissues and food wrappers,” he said.
“We’ve also had really odd items like basketballs, coat hangers, handbags and chipboard. Things like this mean that other potentially valuable recycling material is ending up in the landfill.”
A common mistake is leaving lids on bottles.
“Please, remember to remove your lids from all plastic and glass bottles and jars. Anything smaller than a credit card can’t be recycled – it is too small to be processed correctly,” Mr Down said.
It is important Porirua gets its recycling right, so we have sent flyers to all Porirua residents, explaining the 3-Strikes Process in detail. There is also a short video on our website explaining how to recycle correctly, and you can always ring our contact centre on 04 237 5089 to ask questions.
Similar initiatives are occurring in other cities, including Hamilton, Christchurch and Dunedin

Graham is a very sweet lad, who isn’t quite sold on people but is learning some of us only come bearing treatos!
Sadly for Graham he was “set free” at Christmas time when most of the neighbours were away 🥺 This meant it took at least 3 weeks for help to be called for him, and all this while he was getting about with a sore footie 🦶 his owners never came forward nor owned up despite many knowing which property Graham originally lived on
The exact causes of the sore foot remain unknown until Graham learns to speak, however it’s obvious he will at the very least need x-rays to see if surgical intervention is needed to ensure he is not in any pain 💊 We’re staring down the barrel of at least $400, nearing $2000 if we have to stabilize his joints in surgery 💸
Humans have let Graham down in the past and be damned if we are going to let him down too.
Can you spare us $1? If each person who saw this post gave us just $1, we would have Grahams xrays covered with enough left over for a pack of treats!

He reminded members that the first $1,000 we won in the Regional Finals of the Wellington Airport Regional Community Awards in the Sport and Leisure category had been spent on the purchase of ERKs, perhaps to be sent to Tonga. The second $1,000 prize for winning the Final would be spent on other projects the Club is undertaking.
Jo congratulated the club on winning the award which is sponsored by Wellington Airport, Wellington Community Trust, and five local Councils. Judges comprise the five regional Mayors and representatives from the Community Trust and Wellington Airport. The Awards have been running for 17 years and this year there were 270 groups who applied. Jo commented that the applications reflected the enormous contribution that volunteers make around the region. She presented President Kay with a beautiful certificate which for the next little while is going to hang at The Lighthouse for all to admire. It should be noted that this was the first year that finalists had to produce a video and write their own script. Sincere thanks are due to Phillip for having produced and delivered this.

The council has subsequently taken a hammering on social media, with residents arguing that with Covid-19 impacting negatively on shopkeepers, paid parking would force people to shop elsewhere.
Councillors on Thursday morning resolved to suspend paid parking until March 2023.
