This week we introduce a new photographer, Roger Smith, to Friday Feathered Friend. He recently spotted a sooty tern in the Waikanae Estuary, where he is a regular photographer.
“I had taken a walk along the sandspit to have a look at the white-fronted tern flock there - not expecting to see any interesting birds - and I was stunned to see this lovely brown bird amongst them again...With the sun right behind me, I crawled very slowly holding my camera in front of my face until, after about 20 metres of inching over hot sand, I got within a few metres of it. It wasn't aware of my presence, so I just lay there and took over 100 shots before backing away.”

Every part of the dandelion is edible, from the flower and leaves to the root.
The greens are a good source of Vitamins C, A, and K. They are also full of calcium. Dandelions are rich in potassium, giving them a strong diuretic quality as well as making them an excellent blood detoxifier.

Our speaker was Helen Griffin, the Country Coordinator for ‘Days for Girls’, an organisation that makes life easier for menstruating girls in developing countries. Past President Donna has mentioned that she had asked the Club to support Days for Girls in Schools when we built the school in Balibo, Timor Leste but the timing wasn't right. However, the news has just come through that Days for Girls support has just been implemented in Balibo.

“Today is the two-year adoptaversay of Klio and Quintus (Charlotte and Quinn). How pawsome! We wanted to let you know that they are both doing very well. Klio went from being very shy to now insisting on always being on our laps. Always. Even to the point of trying to get up before we have fully sat down. Quintus was diagnosed with diabetes last January, but has responded very well to the insulin injections and continues to be quite chatty and fluffy. Wishing you all well, and thank you again to the whole team -- your mahi and aroha make such a difference in the lives of kitties and humans alike.”
