Last year alone, 427 serious injuries claims were made to ACC because of crashes and driving incidents over this long weekend.

Let's make sure we all arrive alive to where we need to go by following these four simple and proven road safety actions:

- Make sure everyone has their seatbelts on
- Remove distractions and stay focused on driving
- Don’t get behind the wheel if you’ve been drinking or are tired
- Drive at a safe speed for the conditions

With severe and changeable weather forecast for across the country the following winter driving tips are equally important as well.

The only way we can reduce unnecessary road deaths and injuries is by working together to be safe, considerate and alert on the roads. If you spot dangerous driving behaviour or urgent but not life threatening driving incidents you can report it to the New Zealand Police by calling *555 for free from any mobile device.

Have a great long weekend!

This week Bill McAulay chaired a panel discussion focussed on young people and their opinions. The panellists were all from Porirua College, with which our club has a close association. Pictured here from left to right are:

Deputy Head Boy, Taupe-Jack Lomax, Deputy Head Girl, Madonna Tui, Head Girl, Tiresa Fomai and Head Boy, Pualaga Tuai'aufa'i, together with Teacher and Guidance Counsellor, Steve Barnsley.

The students had chosen five themes: Labels, Gender, Sports, Stereotypes, and The Future. They made some initial observations on each theme and then responded to questions from the floor.

Porirua College is unusual. The roll is two-thirds Pasifika and a quarter Maori, a makeup which naturally determines the culture of the school. They told us about prejudice, their pride in the college and the city, and the importance of sport in fixing identity. They considered themselves more liberal than previous generations, especially in gender matters.

In thinking about the future, they were apprehensive about climate change, pollution, species extinctions and the loss of traditional freedoms. They accepted that they were the next responsible generation and would have to deal with these problems.

Were they being too pessimistic? Is the outlook for humanity any worse than during the cold war?

The students were unfazed by having to address a room full of oldies, and confident in their delivery. We wish them the best of luck.

Unique event happening next month at the Paremata Boating Club

A few months ago, I had this cool experience - I went to an ancient shamanic drumming event.

It wasn't long before I dropped into a deep lucid-dreaming state. (This is when you're having a dream but you remain awake and aware. )

It was profound.

I meditate most days but I still struggle with getting into 'flow'.

Last January I went to this fun event with Melissa Billington. She runs Ancient Shamanic Drumming Journeys in Auckland.

Sharing with the other participants. I found most, if not all had similar stories.

I loved the journey, which is why I invited Melissa to share it with our community here in Porirua.

This event is open to everyone. It will be a relaxed & fun evening.
And great, if you want to deepen your meditations. This unique experience will stay with you forever.

Where: Paremata Boating Club
When; Wednesday, 19th June from 7pm - 9pm
Tickets: $35 (early bird)
