Spicer Landfill is an important part of the infrastructure of Porirua City and is running out of space faster than expected.

This year we’ve been talking about how we might extend the landfill, and the types of protection we need to put in place to minimise things like odour, and to protect our waterways, plants and animals.

We’d like to show you the draft design for the extension and hear your thoughts on this. Have your say
• Tuesday 5 July 6.30-8pm Tawa Community Centre
• Wednesday 6 July 12.30-2pm Helen Smith room – Pātaka
• Thursday 7 July 7-8pm – Online with Zoom

Your input and views will help us fine-tune the plans to extend the landfill.

An exciting new project that aims to restore the health of Te Awarua-o-Porirua Harbour is having its first public planting event on 9 July, and everyone is invited to join in.

The community planting day is part of the Streamside Planting Programme – a transformational project to improve the water quality of Porirua City’s streams and waterways, and keep sediment and pollution out of the harbour.

The programme was launched in April by Porirua City Council, in partnership with Ngāti Toa and Sustainable Coastlines. Over 20 years it aims to plant more than 6 million plants on the banks of the 588km of streams that run into the harbour.

Porirua Mayor Anita Baker said this was an exciting step forward for a harbour that was treasured by the people of Porirua, and a team effort would be key to the project’s success.

Details: Saturday 9 July, 9.30am to 2pm, Waitangirua Stockards, Belmont Regional Park.

"I used to avoid posting photos where I had accidentally captured a nictitating membrane - I thought they looked like weird sausage-skin sideways eyelids. Then I read that they are amazing built-in bird goggles, so the bird can blink and still see, or even shutter their eyes in extreme conditions to protect their eyes while flying or diving. Apparently we used to have them too - the pink blob in the inner corner of our eyes is a vestigial membrane. I suppose we evolved out of needing them - still they might have been handy the other day when I was trying to take photos on the beach during a gale. Pūkeko/purple swamphen (Porphyrio melanotus) at Waimanu Lagoon."
