Sustainability in action
Graduates of Ara Institute of Canterbury’s sustainability and outdoor education programmes really ‘walk the talk’. With sustainability such an integral part of their studies, they’re naturally motivated to put sustainability into action, wherever they can.
Recent graduate Timea Kovacs encouraged local tourism company Christchurch Sea Kayaking to sign up to Tourism Industry Aotearoa’s new sustainability initiative. Now, staff at the kayaking business collect rubbish as they move through the water and clients naturally join in. “We need more businesses, especially tour operators, to showcase this behaviour change,” says Timea.

Poll: Do you think banning gang patches is reasonable?
With the government cracking down on gangs, it is now illegal for gang members to display their insignia in public places whether through clothing or their property.
This means arrests can be made if these patches are worn in places like restaurants, shops, on public transport or ferries, and on airplanes. Arrests were made recently at a funeral.
