All of New Zealand is at risk of earthquakes and all of our coastline is at risk of tsunami. We can’t predict when they will happen, but we can definitely take steps to protect ourselves and our family.
I wanted to get in touch with you today to let you know about our national earthquake drill and tsunami hīkoi. More than 600,000 New Zealanders have already signed up to take part in this year.
New Zealand ShakeOut, is being held at 9.30am on 18 October. It’s a chance for your school, business, household or organisation to practice the right action to take before, during and after earthquakes and tsunami.
Whether you’re a household, business, organisation or school, you can sign up to take part and find information on how to plan your drill, and how to hold a tsunami hīkoi if you’re in a coastal region.
If you haven’t already made an emergency plan with your household, check out happen.nz and work it out today.
We look forward to shaking out with you!
All the best,
Sarah Stuart-Black

The supermarket's move is expected to remove 11.6 million straws from circulation and the waste stream each year. WOW.
Do you think other NZ supermarkets should follow suit?

A warranty is extra to the protections in the Consumer Guarantees Act (CGA) and can’t override or replace these. This means a retailer can't just say you're out of luck because the warranty period has ended.
The CGA says that products have to be of an acceptable quality which means they must be fit for purpose (or do what they're made to do), last for a reasonable amount of time, be safe, and be free from any minor defects. What is “acceptable quality” is based on what you could reasonably expect taking into account things like the nature of the goods, what you paid for them, and any particular statements made about the goods.
If you have a problem with something you’ve bought and the warranty period has ended, you might still be entitled to have it repaired or replaced. Check out our information on your rights as a consumer or phone CAB on 0800 367 222.

Is the solution to Auckland's traffic problem in our pockets? Our National Correspondent has been investigating how the movements of your smartphone are being tracked, collected and sold to government agencies. To read more about this, click here.
The location data Google and Spark collect from our smartphones is being studied to try and solve Auckland's biggest transport problems.
For example, some data is being used to help monitor the performance of new state highway infrastructure or upgrades, including measuring travel times through the Waterview Tunnel.
What are your thoughts on this? Were you aware of it? Do you think a solution to your city's roads can be found in the data? Let us know in the replies!
