Kia ora neighbours, a council-led project aimed at making Henderson safer, which led to community backlash, cost ratepayers and taxpayers more than $1.3 million.

The Henderson Streets for People trial was launched in May and included a traffic flow plan, which redirected traffic to Alderman Drive, artwork at the intersection of Great North Rd, Railside Ave and Ratanui St, a trial of bus-only lanes, and “safe shared paths” for people on bikes and scooters.

The trial was opposed by many locals and business owners, with two protests and an online petition of more than 5000 signatures.

At the time, residents labelled the trial a “nuisance” and said the changes had caused traffic “chaos”.

How do you feel about the cost of the project?

Bin tags: Scrapping pay-as-you-throw collection 'unfair', low-waste residents say

Auckland Council’s proposal to scrap bin tags in favour of rates-funded rubbish collections has been labelled “unfair” by residents who produce very little waste.

West Auckland, North Shore and Papakura residents have been on a pay-as-you-throw system for their kerbside rubbish collection since 2017-2018.

This system was to be implemented across the region, however, Auckland Council now believes the price of bin tags will need to be much higher to incentivise residents to reduce their waste.

So, it is proposing to move the entire region to a rates-funded collection service, the price of which is determined by what size bins residents use.

The council estimates that with a standard 120 litre rubbish bin, this will cost households $314 per year, which covers rubbish, recycling and inorganic collection. In 2023, the council will also roll out a food scraps collection service, which is not optional and will bring the rate up to $375.

For those who put out a 120L bin each week, the rates-funded model will cost them less than the current PAYT system, at $2.89 per week compared to a $4.25 bin tag.

However for those who are low-waste, the rates-funded system may cost them more.

So this farcical has gone from a so called 'peaceful, loving' protest, to a virus riddled occupation full of filth, excrement and foul language etc ... to a violent situation where everything including the kitchen sink are now being thrown at the Police.
Apparently some protesters have been in possession of various weapons, including fire extinguishers, a cord set up as a trip wire, paint-filled projectiles, homemade plywood shields and pitchforks.
Currently there is a tent burning rapidly, all the while protesters are throwing fuel on the flames including mattresses as well as signs. They are throwing whatever they can on the fire including rubbish bins.
Protesters are hurling projectiles, including metal pipes at police officers.
ENOUGH IS ENOUGH!!!
To all of you who chose to protest, and I use that word loosely as it's not a protest, YOU DON'T SPEAK FOR ME and you sure as heck don't speak for the majority of us. So stop saying you are😡
You are an embarrassment now, both nationally and internationally - the shame of it all.
And what exactly did you achieve excluding notoriety? NOTHING! Absolutely nothing!

Shortly after 7.30pm on Sunday, the Piha Surf Life Saving search and rescue squad was alerted by police to a child in distress off Piha’s Lion Rock.

A spokesman for Northern region surf lifesaving said volunteers responded to the incident immediately from their homes and three lifeguards swam into the water with rescue tubes.

But by this time, the children and their father were already back on the shore, with the help of surfer and Piha local Nick Brown-Haysom.
