Whitianga Waterways has just applied for 72 new canal housing lots. The 1.9m benchmark could result in much of Whitianga town being submerged.
Should millions of dollars be spent on such new development and Council infrastructure? Should purchasers be invited buy expensive properties which may be under water for this or the next generation?
This crucial decision-making must be made today, not next year or next decade. Councils can no longer pretend that climate change and sea-level rise is something that future councils must deal with.

It's been an horrific week on our roads, with five people losing their lives in vehicle crashes on the district's roads within a few days. New Thames-Coromandel Hauraki road policing Sergeant Rachel Holmes urges drivers to slow down and drive to the conditions.

The District and Regional Councils must define the "coastal environment line" around the entire Peninsula coast. The line is very important because the New Zealand Coastal Policy Statement (NZCPS) only applies to areas within the line. The NZCPS has very strict policies requiring the Council to take account of climate change and sea level rise for at least the next 100 years.
Bizarrely, the District Council’s coastal environment line excludes the three coastal towns of Thames, Whitianga, and Whangamata. Why would the Council wish to exclude these towns from the coastal environment? Do they not want to be obliged to have regard to the climate change and sea level rise policies in the NZCPS when considering new and existing development within those three towns?
If that is the case then the level of head in the sand avoidance of sea level rise issues is astounding and deeply worrying. Low-lying land within these three townships is going to be severely affected by sea level rise (Thames and Whitianga are particularly at risk) regardless of where Council might choose to draw a line on a map. Surely its prudent and sensible to confront the reality of sea level rise and plan accordingly rather than act like King Canute and try to hold back the sea with a pen and a line drawn on a map?

"I was suspicious of the establishment at the time. You need to understand, I had grown up a welfare-dependent "half-caste" (I hate that term) boy living with his mother, escaping from a life of alcohol, crime and a level of violence that I would not tolerate for my daughters. An under-achiever, I was expelled from two secondary schools. I feel I had a reason to be angry at "the system".
"Then I became a father. It changed my life. I needed to be a responsible adult caring for a son, then a daughter – eventually seven children. We were young parents and wanted to do only the best for these precious beings.
"I read the pamphlet. It described "studies" in the Netherlands into communities that didn't look like mine, but I took little persuasion. I stated our second child, our little daughter Te Miringa, would not be immunised.
"At the time my wife Tracy was working as a nurse at the local medical centre and immunising children daily. Yet this was my protest against the establishment that I so mistrusted.
"Fifteen months later, we had a scare. Te Miringa became unwell with high fever and a body rash and the doctors were concerned as there was a measles outbreak locally. And I realised the information from the Netherlands did not reflect my reality.
"We got Te Miringa immunised."
