A witness says the lone officer was protecting himself after one of a duo tried to ram him with a car, smashing into his patrol car.

The incident unfolded on the Hikuai Settlement Rd at Duck Creek on Monday evening.

One resident was at home nearby when he heard the shots ring out.

"There was probably six or eight shots. Bang, bang, bang at the back door," said the man, who did not want to be named.
