This extract from a "Years of Living Dangerously" video shows how just 20 cm of sea level rise over the last century put thousands of additional New York homes into the path of Super Storm Sandy. Climate change and existing sea level rise is already causing much greater damage to coastal property and infrastructure. Scientists tell us we will have a further 30 – 40 cm of sea level rise in the next 30 to 40 years. Unless we face up to these issues now Thames is going to face severe coastal flooding in the very near future.

The move comes after much public debate on the appropriateness of firearms being brought into schools, including when soldiers taught children as young as nine how to assemble and shoot assault rifles at a leadership exercise in Palmerston North last year. However students can still use firearms as part of shooting clubs and competitions. Click here to read the full article and guidelines.

Irrigation would improve the condition of the Thames track, however, at more than $50,000, it wasn't cost effective for the club to install it for one race meeting a year. All members have been informed of the change in venue and transport will be arranged to Te Aroha for raceday in January.

But when the existing ban on some conservation land was first introduced in the 1990s, mining companies were not able to convert their prospecting permits into a mining license. Neither did they receive any compensation. We need to make sure that this precedent is followed when the Labour/Greens/New Zealand First government introduces its ban on all conservation land.
