The stranding, which took place over two days and nights between October 17 and 19, demonstrated the … View moreOn behalf of the Department of Conservation (DOC), I would like to thank all those who came together in an effort to refloat the pilot whales which stranded at Colville Bay earlier this month.
The stranding, which took place over two days and nights between October 17 and 19, demonstrated the great community spirit of the northern Coromandel, with local community members first on the scene in an immediate response which largely contributed to the successful re-floating of the pod that evening.
I would particularly like to thank Hauraki iwi, Dave Hamon, members of the Colville community and the area’s rural fire brigade, Colville Sailing Academy, MEG, Project Jonah, WRC Harbour Master, Massey University, James Drainage and the Mahamudra Centre for Universal Unity for their collective efforts during the stranding.
Marine mammal strandings are difficult and emotional events. People have a strong connection to these animals, and whales in particular. Pilot whales are notorious for multiple strandings, and with both tide and time against our efforts it was a remarkable achievement to save the majority of this pod.
I am continually humbled by the passion, commitment and dedication shown by those who support these efforts. The events that unfolded over course of the stranding became a superb demonstration of co-operation, and a commitment to conservation of wildlife.

The first time in the market's history the road will be closed for us … View moreWhat a day it'll be - 25 years of Thames Market (well, not on the real day when Peter and Dianne McKinnon had the first Thames Market early September postponed because of the that vicious virus but close enough). The first time in the market's history the road will be closed for us between Pahau and Cochrane Streets - courtesy of Thames Coromandel District Council (thank you, thank you, thank you!). We'll have a huge range of stalls (almost 100, many of them on the street), street performers (Team Waihi and Signor Buffo), buskers, new stalls, well known regular stalls (some with specials), good weather (non negotiable) and slideshows! Thames Cinema's Dave Ritchie has kindly offered the entrance to his premises for the location of a large TV screen (courtesy Netherton School - thank you to Martin Rodley for organising it) to run a slideshow with photos from 25 years of the market. Lotus Realm, ever so supportive of T/M, will continue the same slideshow on a TV in their small shop window between the doors for a little while. And to top it off - we'll be going until 1pm. Come and enjoy the fun (we promise not to use any brackets in our next post).

Historic Kōpū Bridge Society invites you to come out to Kōpū over Labour weekend and enjoy our 92-year-old swing span bridge – the only one of its kind in New Zealand and a category 1 historic place. The bridge’s gates will be open from 7am to 6pm on Saturday 24th, Sunday 25th and Monday 26th - many thanks to the volunteers who have filled the roster to make this happen. The bridge is wheelchair and mobility scooter accessible from both ends.

An Auckland trucking company wishes to dump millions of cubic metres of industrial waste in a proposed site in Huntly, close to the only 'swimmable' lake left in the Waikato region. In 2012, a Waikato Regional Council scientist compared the nutrient levels in Waikato lakes to 1316 others globally and found them to be among the worst. This indicator has not shifted in the eight years since.

She has self-published numerous books and recently… View moreLorraine Duffin will speak tomorrow, Wednesday 21st, at the NZ Society of Genealogists, Thames Branch’s final meeting of 2020. She will exhibit her colourful books and show us this interesting way of publishing photos and stories of our families. She has self-published numerous books and recently did one for each of her adult children, using photos from their babyhood until recently.
The books are published from your own selection of photos and texts and set up from templates of internet publishing houses. A relatively simple way to make lovely bound books to share with your immediate or extended families and friends. Later on, they can order extra copies online.
These are a great way to use both your heritage family photos and your most recent digitals. So, come and see how to create a family history album!
If you have already begun that journey by writing stories…there are a number of companies in New Zealand who are helping home publishers achieve lovely professionally bound books.
