To all Property Managers and owners of rentals

Donna from Otaki District

Just because a Property Manager/owners of a rental can increase the rent once a year doesn't mean they have to. Contrary to their belief that WINZ will cover the increase, this is a false belief. Contrary to their belief that WINZ will cover the increase, this is a false belief. If a pensioner/renter lives in Otaki they only get $80 a week maximum on the Accommodation Support. If need be WINZ may add a top-up on the Temporary Assistance Support. BUT .. they do not cover all the rent. In Waikanae the renter/pensioner gets $100 on Accommodation and a small top-up on Temporary Assistance if they qualify. It is NOT a given. For most pensioners all of their Super goes on the rent and when this happens that is when they can get the Accommodation Supplement and maybe the Temporary Supplement. Which by the way is not Temporary unless by some miracle the rent is reduced. I will not hold my breath waiting to hear social housing or more affordable properties are available. Kainga Ora has bought a few parcels of land but building will not happen for at least three years on some sections and why they are holding off on other parcels of other land just frustrates me.

Kāpiti experienced its cloudiest November in a decade, with only five completely sunny days. However, rainfall was again well below average and temperatures only very slightly below average.

The average daily maximum temperature of 19.2 degrees, although normal, was below the 20 degrees required for November to qualify as a summer month, as it has in recent years; only Blenheim and Lower Hutt managed that in Central New Zealand this November.

Rainfall of around 45 mm was 60 percent of average, being the sixth consecutive month of average or below average rainfall.

Sunshine totalled the equivalent of 13 sunny days, the lowest in a decade, with the 10-year average being 17.5 days.

El Niño has arrived and is indicating this summer will be cooler than recent years, with November’s wind and cloud likely to continue, along with a lack of rain.

Downsize to a richer, happier life

Charles Fleming Retirement Village

What do you want to do with your life? Would you like to travel, downsize, have more money and more free time? Do you ever feel like your stuff holds you back, but the thought of decluttering just seems too hard? If so, you’re not alone.

What do you want to do with your life? Would you like to travel, downsize, have more money and more free time? Do you ever feel like your stuff holds you back, but the thought of decluttering just seems too hard? If so, you’re not alone.

This is the first of a series of articles dedicated to helping you to downsize, declutter and rightsize your life, brought to you by Ryman Healthcare in conjunction with decluttering expert Peter Walsh.
When helping people to declutter, Peter never starts by focusing on the stuff itself. Every item in your home has a story, so the first step is to think about what that story is.

Maybe you’re thinking about downsizing as you approach retirement but still have all the artwork and toys and books that belonged to your now adult children, and don’t know what to do with them. Perhaps letting go of that old sports equipment means letting go of a vision you had of yourself that no longer fits who you are. Maybe you’re holding onto heirlooms you have no use for because you want to keep the memory of the person alive.

No matter what your situation is, it’s easier to declutter and downsize if you start by identifying the feelings that underlie your attachment to your stuff before tackling the stuff itself.
