Why host?
Hosting a student is an enriching experience for both families and students. You’ll experience a true cultural exchange, sharing knowledge of your culture whilst learning about the many different cultures represented by our students. Many of our host families build lasting relationships with their students
What is expected from host families?
Involve their student in their life, treat them as a member of the family.
Be caring and understanding, patient but able to set boundaries
Show their students how to get to and from school (e.g. where the bus stop is, how to find the bus schedule, how to walk to school).
Provide three meals a day and snacks (including a packed lunch during the school week).
Provide a furnished bedroom
Provide bed linen (sheets, pillow, and blankets) and towels
What we provide
The International Department provides you with ongoing advice and support.
Homestay families receive $301 per week.

Our kakabeak has developed pods. I understand that you are able to propagate from these.
When should they be removed from the plant?
And is there anyone out there that would like the pods? I am giving them away.

However, for most of the month rainfall was again below average, and we ended the year without any severe or extreme weather events in 2023.
Although the average daily maximum temperature of 21.1 degrees was only half a degree below average it couldn’t compete with the east coast who experienced some extremely high temperatures, unusual even for them so early in summer; no doubt due to El Niño and our cooling nor-westerly breezes off the sea.
But, we still enjoyed 24 days with temperatures of 20 degrees or over, the same as Blenheim, the warmest place in central New Zealand.
Rainfall of around 90 mm was average, this being the seventh consecutive month of average or below average rainfall. Sunshine totalled the equivalent of 15 sunny days compared with 22 in December 2022.
Statistics for the year show that autumn was our wettest season, with the highest rainfall in April amounting to 203 mm, while June was the driest with only 8 mm. January was the sunniest month with the equivalent of 21.5 days of sunshine, with February and November the cloudiest with only 13 sunny days. January was also the warmest with an average daily temperature of 24 degrees. Nine months of 2023 had above average temperatures, this December being one exception.

I would hate anyone else to go through the fear and suffering l have ,and are enduring, because they simply don't know what activities are permitted where we live !
Last week , my neighbours used shot guns almost next to my boundary with no warning.
Don't be scared ( like I was ) when I tripped, fell , dislocated my shoulder and fractured it .
It is just a neighbour exercising their right to shoot near you even though you are initially scared shitless.
Police advise this is perfectly legal despite proximity. I had no idea whatsoever this type of activity could occur or l wouldn't have been so scared. Buying lifestyle blocks does not come with this warning. Perhaps it should !
I should clarify I am used to the occasional air rifle nearby shooting rabbits but these guns were on a whole different level.
Harrisons Garden Centre always advise me when they are shooting rabbits so l thought it was law. But it is in fact them just being courteous and considerate. Shooters are not obliged to advise activity , it depends how considerate they are.
So don't be like me ! Don't freak out when you hear loud gun shots closeby. I am telling you so no one else gets a fright and hurts themselves as badly as I did. Particularly when there is no help available due to public holidays.
Photo shows SOME of my injuries , so it is obvious I am not exaggerating.
