The Pantry – located in Omahi Street, Waikanae is open and operating under Alert Level 4 requirements and can provide full pre-cooked meals.
Citizens Advice Bureau can't operate face to face at level 4 but our 0800 367 222 should be up and running shortly. If you ring 04 298 4944 you might even get me. Hopefully I'll be able to help!

I usually try to zoom right in on the subject and move around so that I can get rid of any distracting twigs or leaves that might cover the subject or create unwanted shadows. Lately I've been thinking sometimes it's good to put a bit of habitat in, especially when it has such beautiful colours as this winter tree just starting to bud up. Kererū/ wood pigeon (Hemiphaga novaeseelandiae), rocking those golden browns and forest greens."

With a total of $710 coming in this week, our new figure now stands at $103,282.30. With everything that has been going on this week, we are more than chuffed you all have still been thinking about us, and our need to secure a permanent home.
Maybe because you cannot buy your favourite cup of coffee over the weekend, perhaps you could jump onto our give-a-little-page or our website and donate that $5 (both now have direct donation links).

Now that we are in lockdown the SPCA is not rehousing cats and dogs.

Peepo - "A couple weeks ago we adopted Benjamin Button, now called Peepo. He has been a delight and a half, to say the least, and has grown so big in such a small amount of time! Slowly, he has adjusted to his new home and is now a superb older brother to his little sister, Namnam. The staff at the SPCA were super helpful throughout the entire adoption process, even giving us tips on how to introduce our new kittens. Suffice to say they are now best buddies."

"This means we must stay at home in our bubbles, mask up and maintain physical distancing when we go out to access essential services or light exercise. All our pools, libraries and Council service centres are closed. Our playgrounds are also closed but they are not taped off due to the short notice we had to move to Alert Level 4 and the need to keep our people safe – the Delta variant is a very different beast and we are not prepared to put our people, who are your friends and neighbours, at risk. The Prime Minister has made it very clear that the use of playgrounds is strictly prohibited so please do the right thing and follow the Alert Level 4 rules. We appreciate that this is a very unsettling time for everyone and we’ll do our best to keep you informed. Our call centre is still operating so if you need urgent assistance you can contact us on 0800 486 486 (if it’s an emergency situation please call 111).

KCDC has advised that they will not be allowing people to use the transfer station during lockdown. I would have thought rubbish removal was an essential service. I would have thought rubbish removal was an essential service. It certainly has a public health component. Apparently its only unsanitary if you are paying for it. Yet another inequitable service from council.
They have advised "Only commercial collectors may enter the transfer stations. People who don’t pay for kerbside collection should stockpile their rubbish bags and clean recycling".
The message is loud and clear. Unless you are paying for kerbside collection, you are on your own. So much for building community resilience in the face of pandemics and natural disasters. What a load of rubbish their long term plan is. They are incapable of operationalising any of it.
If you have to stockpile rubbish, be aware that it could attract rats and mice, particularly at this time of year when other sources of food are limited. These rodents carry a number of unpleasant diseases such as Salmonella and any droppings should be disposed of carefully, with disinfectant, rubber gloves and a face mask.
