A Kāpiti Coast couple’s food rescue business has flourished under the unlikely pressures of the Covid lockdown, with more people than ever ordering food to their door.
Wonky Box is a subscription food delivery service run by Angus Simms and Katie Jackson, delivering odd-shaped and excess fresh produce, grown locally in Kāpiti and Wairarapa, to homes around Wellington.
Since Wonky Box launched ahead of the August 2021 lockdown it has grown a customer base of nearly 500 Wellington homes, saving 20 tonnes of food from landfill during the latest lockdown alone.

Insane that KiwiRail should be cutting long distance passenger services, when govt should be rebuilding the whole national rail network, to reduce transport emissions. Hope you’ll get on board this campaign. Petition at our.actionstation.org.nz..., or see www.allrailways.co.nz....
Campaign instigator Patrick Rooney says: I believe we have a real chance to bring back withdrawn passenger services, but we need to show there is public support. And we have limited time to do it.
Passenger rail has an important place in our future but requires investment and planning for the future. Here are some reasons why:
• Rail provides a more sustainable and climate friendly method of transport across the country.
• Rail can invigorate the social and economic life of small communities by making them accessible to remote workers and tourists.
• Trains can bring our diverse country together by connecting them to people and landscapes across wide distances.
• Trains provide an accessible method of point-to-point transport for the elderly, disabled people, and people without cars.
• With the right Government support trains can provide affordable transport for people on low-income.
• Less cars on the roads can help to make our roads safer.
If you'd like to get more involved in the campaign email Patrick (patrick@allrailways.co.nz)

“Today is the two-year adoptaversay of Klio and Quintus (Charlotte and Quinn). How pawsome! We wanted to let you know that they are both doing very well. Klio went from being very shy to now insisting on always being on our laps. Always. Even to the point of trying to get up before we have fully sat down. Quintus was diagnosed with diabetes last January, but has responded very well to the insulin injections and continues to be quite chatty and fluffy. Wishing you all well, and thank you again to the whole team -- your mahi and aroha make such a difference in the lives of kitties and humans alike.”

Has the Kapiti Observer gone mad? What planet are they on? How can they possibly think these garden thugs are endearing?
Perhaps I should post some photos of all the bulbs and plants they have dug up around here. The Muscari they dug up, not once, but three times. The Azaleas they ripped out. The Dahlia bulbs.... The fruit trees they have stripped. The potatoes and carrots they have dug up, (taking a bite out of each one). The poop they leave everywhere, fouling up our paddocks and making grazing impossible.
Most distressing is the way they swoop in and slaughter our precious native ducks and threatened grey teal. I hear the ducklings screaming as they are carried off and ripped apart, and there is nothing I can do to save them as cant get to them in time. Pukekos, in my view, are the most troublesome, gruesome, destructive birds imaginable.

A pied stilt/poaka (Himantopus leucocephalus) and a South Island pied oystercatcher/tōrea (Haematopus finschi) keeping each other company at Sandfly Bay in Dunedin as the Sun goes down. Showing you don't even need to be the same species to get along - they remind me of me and my husband - he's the skinny one dozing off while I'm talking. Birds #27 and #28 for 2022."
