SeniorNet Kapiti, in conjunction with KCDC and Te Wiki Kaumatua, is running two Open Days to showcase how SeniorNet can help older members of the community deal with IT challenges.
Do you (or a friend, neighbour or family member) sometimes struggle to cope with your laptop, PC, smart phone or tablet? Are you still nervous about signing up for Internet Banking or any of the many other services that we are now encouraged (required?) to access electronically?
Maybe you've never done much computing and need to start with the basics? Or are you a regular user and just want to learn how to get the most out of your device or stay up-to-date with new developments?
We deal with these issues all the time at SeniorNet and our friendly tutors are always willing to go the extra mile to help. With a comprehensive programme of courses and workshops coming up in Term 4 2022, now is a good time to get started!

If you or someone you know could do with some IT help, please come along to our Learning Centre at 200 Matai Road, Raumati Beach between 11.00 and 2.00 pm on Sat 8th or Tues 11th Oct and talk to one of our tutors about how SeniorNet can help.

We would love to see you. You can find more information at kapiti.seniornet.nz

The Kapiti Coast Airport is under threat of being closed down permanently eventually.
This airport is unique to this area and has served this community well. Unfortunately the current owners (the Templeton Group) are property developers not caretakers and would like to see a large area of the land consumed with housing.
It would be devastating to our communities to lose this Taonga (Jewel) to a whole lot of housing in this area. We have lots of other areas of land that can be utilised for this.
A recent survey showed an over-whelming 85% of the community want to see our airport retained. This is of course is achievable by using the commercial area as an income to supplement the running of the airport. Kapiti air urban (KAU) have put together a credible plan to include some housing, commercial, papakaianga homes (for maori) and retain the airport.
Local hapu/iwi currently have a claim in on the land and they too want to see the airport retained.
Please support and vote for the candidates that will stand up and voice their concerns on behalf of our communities.
As the saying goes; 'You cant go back and change the beginning, but you can start where you are and change the ending'.
Follow this link to view who supports retaining the airport.

We have expanded our already extensive range of heirloom tomato varieties this year and hope to have them available soon at the Waikanae and Otaki Community Markets - provided we get a few more sunshine hours!
In the meantime, we have Zucchini ready for greenhouse planting now. This is a self-fertile variety ideal for greenhouses and the cooler weather as it does not rely on bees or other insects to set fruit.
Also available now are snowpeas (both green and purple pods), sugarsnap and green garden peas.
Also coming up in a few weeks: dwarf and climbing beans, cucumbers, kumi kumi, pumpkin, kumara, peppers, hot chillis and much more.
Look for our stall tomorrow at Waikanae half-way down Park Road.

Foodstuffs Own Brands Ltd is recalling all batches and all dates of its six Pams brand berry products.
New Zealand has seen a surge of cases of Hepatitis A this year and 12 of those infected (including seven hospitalised) have been linked with the consumption of frozen berries.
The recall of Pams products is a precaution due to this possible link of Hepatitis A associated with berries sourced from Serbia.

Here's what you need to know:
- All batches and all dates of Pams Mixed Berries, Two Berry Mix, Smoothie Berry Mix, and Raspberries have been recalled and removed from supermarkets.
- The Pams products are sold at New World, PAK’nSAVE and Four Square stores nationwide.
- Hepatitis A is a contagious virus which spreads easily. Learn more here.
- Due to the possibility that other brands of berries may be infected, New Zealand Food Safety continues to advise those eating frozen berries to wash hands before and after preparing the berries, briefly boil them before eating and ensure cooking temperatures exceed 85 degree Celsius for 1 minute.

If you have consumed any of these products and have any concerns about your health, seek medical advice.

Another nine cases of hepatitis A have been detected with links to frozen berries, prompting a recall of half a dozen products from the Pams brand.

Pams – a New Zealand division of supermarket giant Foodstuffs – is recalling various frozen berry products as a precaution, over a possible link to recent cases of the contagious virus.

The recall affects all batches and date ranges of the following products:

Pams Frozen Mixed Berries 500g
Pams Frozen Two Berry Mix 1kg
Pams Frozen Two Berry Mix 750g
Pams Frozen Smoothie Berry Mix 500g
Pams Raspberries 500g
Pams Raspberries 350g

The products are being removed from New World, PAK’nSAVE and Four Square stores nationwide.

Arbuckle said they were encouraging people to look in their freezers to see if they have any of the recalled product – people who have these products at home should not eat them raw.

Bringing them to the boil will make them safe, or they can be returned to the place of purchase for a full refund, he said.

Arbuckle said it was important to note the situation was still evolving, “and the picture could change”.

“Our advice to all consumers in the meantime is to continue to exercise care and take extra precautions at home by heat treating frozen berries to kill the virus.”
