We know that over the past few days several groups have been moving across the country in support of a variety of protest causes, most of which are planning to end at Parliament grounds tomorrow.
Police will have a clearer picture of the numbers involved later today as protest groups move closer to Wellington.
Our planning for this has been underway for several weeks, and we are now well placed to respond to a number of, and range of, scenarios. Last year’s Parliamentary occupation provided some helpful learnings for us as an organisation.
Staff numbers have been boosted across all shifts in the district for next two days with more than 80 staff specifically trained in Public Order Policing mobilised to support Wellington district staff.
The focus for Police this week has been on talking to local residents and businesses as well as local iwi and agencies across the government sector.
Road closures are now in place around Parliament, with Molesworth Street and neighbouring streets closed, or operating with restricted access. Parliament has been deemed a no-fly zone, which also prohibits drones.
Our focus has been on ensuring buses and trains are able to operate as normal, and that disruption for local residents and businesses is minimal.
For those coming to march and protest at Parliament, we respect people’s right to demonstrate peacefully in support of their cause, but we are prepared to take enforcement action if it stops being peaceful.
We will have a very low tolerance for any structures being set up on the grounds, and we do have the ability to mobilise additional staff quickly if required. Tow trucks will be on stand-by in the city.
There may be some incidents on which we will need follow up as enquiries later.
To that end, we are keen to have the public’s assistance – to help be our eyes and ears, particularly on Lambton Quay, during the march to Parliament. We will likely want to see any video footage of unlawful activity, and people can report this through 105. But we are also asking that people don’t intervene or compromise their own safety.
It is an important part of our democracy that we preserve people’s right to protest. In the end, our hope is that people come to our city, to have their say on Parliament grounds, and then to leave peacefully.

This week we'll be trimming the large macrocarpa tree in Te Atiawa Park playground, beside the BMX track, to reduce its height and the risk of windthrow. The BMX track and playground will be closed Friday 29 September, 8am–4.30pm for this important mahi.
Our teams will also be clearing away storm debris on Friday at Wesley Knight dog park on Ocean Road, Paraparaumu Beach.

Tax cuts are inherently … View moreThe National party assures us that their proposed tax cuts are funded in a way that is not inflationary. But according to a number of economists, the income streams they are counting on to fund the tax cuts do not exist. National will have to cut core services.
Tax cuts are inherently inflationary. Once the tax cuts are realized, National has no control over how the money is spent. As the money supply increases, that is the amount of money in circulation, inflationary pressures arise. Not only do National not have the money to fund their proposed tax cuts, any gains to the taxpayer will be quickly given back by rising inflation. And cuts to core services may mean that things like access to health care are adversely affected. Whether the tax cuts are funded in a non-inflationary way or not is irrelevant. The real inflationary pressure occurs when the money is spent. National has no control over that.
Poor old Adrienne Orr must be tearing his hair out listening to Christopher Luxon and Nicola Willis. For all their right wing think tank expertise, they appear to have a scant understanding of monetary policy. As one former Secretary to the Treasury once commented to me;
"If only politicians understood the basics of Economics 101, we would be a lot better off". These tax cuts would not make the country better off.

Despite the switch to summer time, and the equinox last evening when the sun crossed the equator to our hemisphere, the next few weeks are renowned for their unsettled, windy weather, so it's not a good time to travel.

The next meeting of The Lions Club of Kapiti is to be held on Tuesday 2 October at the Ocean Road Community Centre (Formerly The Senior Citizens Hall) in Ocean Road.
We will be having a meal ($26.00 per head) and listening to Our Speaker, Cheryl Murray talking about the Neighbourhood support initiative.
This will be followed by a “brief” business session.
We meet at 6.00pm for a 6.30pm meal and we finish at about 8.30pm.
