A MacBook camera does a reasonable job recording and live-streaming and the laptop does not seem to mind the heat of the oven when Chef Finn opens to door to check if the Rhubarb tart is ready.
Today is Crème caramel, Rhubarb custard tart with Raspberry Coulis.

Hi neighbours,

A new Covid-19 case in the Auckland community was announced on Saturday evening, sending the city into a seven-day alert level 3 lockdown.

Here's an important update by reporter Melanie Earley from Stuff:

The Ministry of Health has released new locations of interest the new case, known as Case M, visited while infectious.

The 21-year-old man went to their GP on Friday afternoon, where he got tested, and then to a south Auckland gym later that day.

The new case is a family member of a student from Papatoetoe High School. That student had tested negative three times and had no symptoms.

Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern said there was a “cause for concern” as the person had been infectious for a week and had not been in isolation.

There are currently six new locations of interest visited by the new case. They are:

Hunters Plaza, Papatoetoe, February 20 between 11-2pm and February 26 between 2.55pm-5pm

Burger King, Highland Park, 25 February, 8pm-9pm

Your Health Pharmacy, Papatoetoe, 23 February, 2.45pm-3.50pm

Pak ‘N’ Save Manukau, February 21, 6pm-6.10pm

CityFitness, Papatoetoe, February 26, 3.25pm-4.30pm and February 20, 12.20pm-1.45pm

Manukau Institute of Technology (MIT), Manukau Station Rd, February 22, 24, and 25, 12pm-6.30pm

MIT Breaktime Cafe, February 22, 3.15pm-3.45pm and February 24, 3.45pm-4.15pm.

More locations of interest will be loaded on the Ministry of Health's website.

Anyone who visited these locations is to be considered a casual contact of the new case.

The only exception is CityFitness, where visitors are considered casual plus contacts.

In an email to gym members, CityFitness said it was closed after being notified by Auckland Regional Public Health that a person who tested positive for Covid 19 had visited its Papatoetoe site.

We want March to be all about celebrating the connections we have while making new ones along the way. As we all know, what makes a neighbourhood great isn’t the houses and cars, gardens and streets - it’s the people who share their presence and aroha with each other.

A wonderful way to take part is to participate in Neighbours Day Aotearoa which takes place from 20 - 30th March. This year’s theme is ‘The Great Plant Swap’ - as an easy way for our neighbourhoods to grow stronger together. If you’re hosting an event, make sure to register it on their website: neighboursday.org.nz/join-in

Auckland houses are less affordable than those in all but three other cities from eight countries surveyed for the 2021 Demographia international housing affordability report.

It’s now more affordable to buy a house in San Francisco or London than in Auckland. A new report has ranked the Super City as the fourth least affordable housing market in the world.

The 2021 annual Demographia international housing affordability report, which is a scaled down version of previous years’ reports, looks at housing affordability in Australia, Canada, Hong Kong, Ireland, New Zealand, Singapore, UK and the US.

It ranks 92 major housing markets – with populations of more than one million – in eight countries based on the median multiple, which measures median house price divided by gross median household income.

According to the report, Auckland now has a “median multiple” of 10.0. That’s up from 8.6 last year when it was the equal sixth most unaffordable market with Toronto, and from 6.4 in 2010, just a decade ago.

Regions with house prices more than three times the median regional income are considered unaffordable, so Auckland’s median multiple makes it severely unaffordable.

Hi Neighbours,

Here's an important Covid-19 update:

Georgia Forrester and George Block

A Kmart and a vape store in Auckland are the latest locations linked to the movements of a person who has tested positive for Covid-19.

The owner of the vape store, Dark Vapes, in East Tamaki, said the closure of his shop on Wednesday for deep cleaning, followed by his mandatory self-isolation, would be tough for his small business.

Three new community cases of Covid-19 in south Auckland were announced on Tuesday.

The first was a student at Papatoetoe High School, which the Ministry of Health announced earlier in the day. Two other cases – the student’s siblings, who are a teenager and an infant – were confirmed on Tuesday evening.

Kmart in Botany, in east Auckland, and Dark Vapes are among the places of interest visited by one of the cases, with further locations expected to be released on Wednesday.

Kmart Botany

The teenager reported as a new case on Tuesday night works at Kmart Botany.

They were at work on Friday, February 19 and Saturday, February 20, between 3.30pm and 10.30pm.

The store was closed on Tuesday night, and a thorough sanitisation of the store was being carried out, a Kmart spokesperson said.

Thirty-one Kmart staff have been identified as close contacts and are self-isolating, the ministry said.

Any members of the public who visited Kmart Botany at the times the student was working is considered a casual plus contact, and must self-isolate at home immediately.

Casual plus contacts are those who would have been considered casual contacts, but have been upgraded due to the risk of the more transmissible strains of the virus.

“If you are a casual plus contact, you are advised to immediately isolate at home and call Healthline on 0800 358 5453 for advice on isolation time frames and testing requirements,” the ministry said.

Dark Vapes

One of the two high school students announced as new cases on Tuesday also twice visited Dark Vapes in East Tamaki, on Friday and Saturday.

The owner, who did not want to be named, said the store would be closed on Wednesday for deep cleaning, and he would isolate at home for 14-days, as per Ministry of Health advice.

“It's going to be tough for the business.”

He said the store would be able to reopen after cleaning as another staff member was available to help run it.

The owner did not know the identity of the case who visited.

A Ministry of Health spokeswoman said she was not sure which of the cases visited the store.

The visits to the vape store took place on Friday, February 19 between 2.30pm and 4pm, and also Saturday, February 20, between 7pm and 8.30pm.

People who visited the store during these times are considered to be casual-plus contacts.

More locations are expected to be released by the ministry on its website.

**UPDATED:** 1.23pm Sunday 28 February

The Prime Minister and the Director-General of Health have provided an update to media in the Beehive.

Ardern has confirmed that health authorities have found a possible person to person link for how Case M and N picked up Covid-19. This could eliminate concern that there are other chains of transmission to identify.

Ashley Bloomfield asked people to keep an eye out for atypical symptoms
"This new variant of the virus, the B117, does seem to be presenting with symptoms that are not the typical respiratory symptoms," he said.

If you have muscle aches, do consider this might be a Covid-19 symptom.

Hi Auckland,

How worried are you about coastal erosion in Auckland?

Auckland's shoreline could recede by 200m by 2130 if little to no action on climate change is taken.

The report, titled "Predicting Auckland's exposure to coastal instability and erosion", details the impacts this will have on communities the Auckland region.

Sea level rise is notoriously difficult for scientists to follow and this has meant coastal erosion rates have been difficult to predict.

New Zealand's sea levels have risen an average 1.67mm per year since 1989, but the Ministry of Environment says this will accelerate if little action is taken on climate change.
