A $6.4 million sports centre has reopened in Otara after a major facelift.

The Ngati Otara Multi-sport and Cultural Centre boasts a new clubroom, kitchen, changing rooms and first-aid centre at Ngati Otara Park.

The south-Auckland building comprises a laundromat for sports kit along with a first-aid room and a cafe/bar for members of the community.

Health services will be provided there at the Whanau Ora Medical Clinic.

Pacific Homecare will hold its Fia Ola (Want to Live) programmes for older residents at the complex.

Manukau Ward councillor Fa'anana Efeso Collins said earlier the upgrade would help develop and retain sporting talent in a disadvantaged community.

The Ngāti Ōtara sports centre was pivotal to the growth and development of local sports in Ōtara, he said.

"It gives local sports codes like rugby league, kilikiti, tag and netball decent playing areas where our local athletes will excel."

Auckland mayor Phil Goff said the new complex transformed the old facilities.

"This investment by Auckland Council recognises that Otara deserves a decent 21st-century sports facility that encourages our young people into sport and inspires them to realise their potential," he said.

Five different sports and more than 150 teams would use the facilities, he said.

Ōtara-Papatoetoe Local Board chair Apulu Reece Autagavaia said he grew up playing kilikiti (cricket) on the fields nearby.

"I remember, as a kid, it was my job to fetch stray kilikiti balls that made their way on the deteriorating roof.

“The previous building was dark, old and no longer fit for purpose. It feels incredible to be able to provide a beautiful, brand new building to the community we can all enjoy and be proud of. "

Cyclists will have additional spots to lock up their bikes with new facilities installed as part of a cycleway trial.

Project WAVE is a $1 million cycleway trial in the Viaduct Harbour to connect the Quay and Nelson Street cycleways that could have over a thousand daily users.

Auckland Transport (AT) confirmed two new bike parking facilities able to accommodate 16 bikes have been installed as part of the trial, taking the total number of bike parks along the cycleway to 56.

The project is opposed by a group of residents and business owners.

The two new bike parking facilities are located on Customs Street West between Market Place and Lower Hobson Street. One is located near the Tepid Baths, and one is near O’Hagan’s bar.

The area now has enough space for around 56 bikes, as there were already existing facilities to accommodate 40 bikes before Project WAVE was implemented.

AT spokeswoman Natalie Polley said there are also numerous new bike parking facilities on Quay Street and in the new square as part of the Downtown project.

"That doesn’t even take into account bike parking at the ferry terminal, the AT Downtown Carpark and at many other locations on the Viaduct,” she said.

Hi neighbours,
Cleaning your windows should be a regular routine as having a build-up of dirt and other filth can lead to problems further down the road and potentially cost you more money, and heat efficiency.

You can keep your new windows looking their best for many years by following a few simple tips:
- Vacuum inside the frame and hinges
- Brush off dirt
- Use a warm soapy solution and a soft cloth or sponge to wipe down the dirty window
- Rinse with clean water

Windows have working parts so it's essential that these parts are well maintained to ease the friction of the moving parts inside your window frames.

To keep your windows in great condition for years it's best to keep the inner chambers of your windows clean and clear of built-up residue.

If you need an expert to assess your windows & doors, give us a call today on 0800 252500 or click the link to book a visit!

As much as we would love to be giving away free cars ... at the present time we are not.

There is a text and a Whats App message doing the rounds that suggests you could be in to win a free Toyota once you follow the link and fill out some details. This is a hoax! The page you get sent to ... screenshot below ... is nothing to do with either Papakura Toyota or Toyota New Zealand.

As a good rule of thumb, and with our Internet Aunty hat firmly on, unless you know the message is legit, best not to click on any links and certainly don't fill out your details.

Cheers to all our customers who have brought this to our attention!
