Being exposed to more people means exposure to more bugs. Along with hygiene practices that help prevent infections, it’s good to do what you can to keep your immune defences in top shape to avoid those winter ills and chills.
How?
• Eating lots of good nutritious food – especially antioxidant rich vegetables and fruits – remember your 5 plus a day.
• Less of the fast junk foods (the ones we missed in level 4!) and more of the fresh home-cooked and nutrient-packed foods (that you enjoyed making in level 4!) and add in those green smoothies and nourishing herbal teas.
• Keep well hydrated. Warming drinks such as lemon ginger and honey are soothing on a winter’s day
• Sunshine – for vitamin D which greatly increases immunity.
• Exercise – regular 20 to 30 minutes a day.
• Sleep – so important for immune maintenance, studies show sleep deprivation drastically alters immune function.
• Good gut health – keeping regular with fibre and maintaining the good bacteria in your gut with probiotics.
Add nutrient and herbal supplements to really pep up your immunity – zinc, vitamin C, vitamin D, garlic, ginger, echinacea, olive leaf, and others. These nutrients and herbs are widely available in a number of immune–enhancing formulas.
There is a lot you can do to improve your immunity and keep well post lockdown. For healthful advice or if you’d like to know more, give me a call today.

Hey Neighbor's I am your local Naturopath & Medical Herbalist with a special focus on Women's health and wellness.
I thought I would pop in and talk you about the advanced hormone testing I offer in my clinic.

I see women everyday who say to me "I AM SICK OF THE TESTS NOT SHOWING ANYTHING 🤷‍♀️ But, I still have all the signs and symptoms of hormone imbalance"

If this is you - it's simply because you haven't had the RIGHT tests done!

The standard blood test 💉is a great first step but it still can't give you the whole picture when it comes to your hormone health.

This is where advanced hormone testing comes in; the DUTCH Test (Dried Urine Comprehensive Testing)
!

So, what are the difference's between getting a blood test or the advanced dried urine test?

🩸Blood - one blood sample taken mid-cycle
🔬DUTCH - urine samples collected 4-5x mid-cycle, options for full month tracking to monitor your hormones throughout your entire cycle

🩸Blood - tests for estradiol, or total estrogen
🔬DUTCH - tests for all three estrogens; estradiol, estrone & estriol, total estrogen AND estrogen metabolites; 2-OH, 4-Oh and 16-OH, AND their detoxification through two methylation markers.

🩸Blood - tests for progesterone
🔬DUTCH - tests for alpha & beta progesterone

🩸Blood - tests for testosterone
🔬DUTCH - tests for DHEA, testosterone, Etiocholanolone, androsterone AND detoxification pathways of 5a & 5B reductase.

🩸Blood - tests for cortisol once in day
🔬DUTCH - tests for 24 hour free cortisol, 24 hour free cortisone, waking, morning, afternoon & evening values of cortisol & a-THF, b-THF, B-THE & DHEA-S

If blood labs ranges aren't giving you answers, come in - let's get you tested and find out what is really happening in the body 👩‍⚕️

Consumer's curtain investigation; how to keep warm this winter

Keeping your home this winter doesn't have to put you in debt, but you will have to be creative.
Consumer have revealed the best curtains to invest in as temperatures begin to cool down to help stop nearly two-thirds of a home's heat from going out its windows.

Honeycomb blinds - which have hexagonal shaped cells in its structure - were the standout performer of the five different blinds tested. Others involved were roman, roller and aluminium and wooden venetians. Both thermal and heavy-lined curtains were also tested.

Consumer head of testing Dr Paul Smith said the heat loss test was measured through an aluminium-framed single-glazed window with each curtain hung for at least three hours. He was pleased to find the honeycomb blinds topped the test having put them in his own home about nine years ago.
He said the hexagonal cells in the curtain, which when extended trap the air in the cells, "acting like a down jacket; trapping still air".

"It was good for me seeing this because anecdotally I thought 'oh these are doing a great job' because when you open the curtains in the morning you can see all the cold air fall out from behind the window."

In the test, the honeycomb blinds retained more than 60 per cent of the heat lost through a bare window.

Roman blinds were the second best performing blind, followed by roller blinds. As for wooden or aluminium venetians, wooden were proven the better insulator, he said. If curtains were preferred, people were urged to go "heavy" and long.

Heavy-lined curtains were ones which had two layers which again acted as an air trap. To get the best result, they needed to go down to the ground, no matter the size of the window, to keep the cold air out.

It was best to keep the gap between the curtain or blind and the frame of the window as small as possible.

Thermal curtains - a curtain which has a thermal layer stitched to the back - did not perform as well as the heavy-lined curtains, he said. However, Dr Smith had come up with a few cheap hacks for people not bothered about what there lounge or particular room looks like for a few cold nights over winter. One was hanging a blanket over the top of your curtains.

"It is less convenient because you've got to hang a blanket and take it down each time.

"We pinned it up where the railing was, so we just pinned it up above the window and just let it hang down and cover the whole window."

The other option was to roll up towels and sit them above your window railing which again prevented cold air circulating around the room.

"It stops the air being sucked in to the top. So when the hot air rises up to the ceiling. If the curtains aren't well-fitted, that warm air falls behind the window.

"They call it the reverse chimney so it's like the air coming down past the window and all the heat being lost, so if you put something across the top it stops that from happening."

TOP TIPS FOR HEAT RETENTION
• Mount curtains as close as possible to the window frame,
• Position nets as close to the window as possible,
• Use floor length curtains and ensure they touch the floor,
• Make curtains a generous width so they overlap the window frames at the sides,
• Using net curtains help with heat retention, especially on wooden frame windows,

• Using a fan "significantly" reduces heat loss.

Nature Calls. Waste Water Plans for Palmerston North.

Iola from Awapuni

PNCC are asking you to have your say on what should happen to the waste water of our growing City.
Option 1. ALL TREATED WASTEWATER IS DISCHARGED TO THE MANAWATU RIVER,WITH IMPROVED REMOVAL OF PHOSPHORUS AND NITROGEN.
Potential rate increase per year $310.

Option 1. ALL TREATED WASTEWATER IS DISCHARGED TO THE MANAWATU RIVER,WITH IMPROVED REMOVAL OF PHOSPHORUS AND NITROGEN.
Potential rate increase per year $310.

Option 2. TREATED WASTEWATER DISCHARGED TO MANAWATU RIVER AT TOTARA ROAD AND BELOW OPIKI BRIDGE, WITH SOME LAND APPLICATION.
Potential rate increase $300 to $450 per year, but total waste water charge per rateable unit $550 to 700 per year.

Option 3. TREATED WASTEWATER APPLIED TO LAND, WITH DISCHARGE TO THE MANAWATU RIVER IN EXCEPTIONAL CIRCUMSTANCES.
Potential rate increase per year $480 to $920 with a total waste water charge per rateable unit of $730 to $1200 a year.

Option 4. TREATED WASTEWATER APPLIED TO LAND, WITH SOME DISCHARGE TO THE MANAWATU RIVER,
Potential rate increase per year $340 to $730 but total wastewater charge per rateable unit $600 to $1000 a year.

Option 5. DISCHARGE TO GROUNDWATER VIA INFILTRATION WITH LAND APPLICATION IN DRIER MONTHS OF THE YEAR.
Potential rate increase $450 to $600 per year with a total waste water charge per rateable property of $750 to $860 per year.

Option 6. MOST OF THE TREATED WASTEWATER DISCHARGED TO THE OCEAN, AND SOME APPLIED TO LAND.
Potential rate increase per year $740 to $900 with a total waste water charge per rateable unit per year of $1,000 to $1,200 .

In my view Neighbours this is a death knell for Palmerston North as it proves Palmerston North is NOT a sustainable City.
Reasons. Firstly all the discharge to river or ocean are not options that can be considered with the Clean Rivers and Ocean policies that have now been adopted.
Secondly, anyone wanting to purchase a property in Palmerston North the Land Agents will have to disclose to their clients, that possible annual waste water charges will be about $1,000 on top of rates.
Thirdly, why is it that industrial use units will be paying the same waste water charges as a home unit?
Fourthly, what is the actual value then of your property if the rates are such that you cannot afford them.? Is PNCC going to reiterate that you see your bank and if freehold take out a mortgage to pay your rates ? or maybe WINZ will help you out?

PNCC is not being in my view honest with this consultation document and I would like to ask, why have they not applied for funds under the Government Infrastructure fund on offer for Councils. And if they have for this wastewater projects, why are the costs so high to ratepayers?

I understand that Horowhenua residents can also have their say on this proposal so I expect to hear from the Manawatu Estuary Trust the Save Our River Trust and Dr. Mike Joy. I hope Rachel Keedwell and all the P.N. Horizons Councillors will also be involved in keeping Palmerston North waste out of the river.

Why are we still discharging to water, when there are other options ?
Some years ago, I purchased a section in a suburb of the Gold Coast and all the sections had to cater for their own waste water within their boundaries. PNCC's District Plan put the kibbosh on that idea by allowing sections of 350 sq metres to be created for developers.
Ridiculous that they say their aims are a sustainable City when we cannot afford a waste water system.

the only option is a land based option but not including into the aquifers or ground water that could be access by bores for human consumption.

Time to look at shifting to another Council .
