• Upholstery weight (ideally) fabric (Spotlight or your favourite store)
• Batting - I used an extra thick batting, be sure to get the width you need to cover your plywood or card
• Plywood or cardboard (local hardware shop or repurpose something lying around)
• Staple gun (& staples!)
• Heavy duty mirror/picture hanger (we recommend Hangman Heavy Duty Mirror and Picture Hanger from Mitre 10 but you can use whatever suits you!)
Step 1. After laying the batting out on my tabletop, I put my sheet of plywood on top. The size of your plywood will depend on the size of your bed. Wrap the batting around the plywood and start stapling it down with a staple gun. Just staple your way all around the board. Super easy.
Step 2. Once the batting was secured, I laid out the fabric with the patterned side down. I gave it a quick ironing to get out any wrinkles before starting. After placing my plywood on top of the fabric, it was time to start stapling the fabric. I started off by doing the two long sides. I made sure to pull it tightly as I was going so that it wouldn’t be too loose in the front.
The corners are the part you want to be careful with. My technique (and I’m not sure if this is the “right” way or not, but it worked) is to approach it like I was wrapping a present. I get one side stapled, and then fold it in to the un-stapled side. Then I bring that piece up and pull it really tightly and staple along the seam. It takes a bit of practice, but I would just do it a few times until I got the perfect seam and then staple ‘er down.
Step 3. Now came the tricky part of actually hanging it. We wanted to attach it directly to the wall rather than to our bed. We searched around and finally came across a Heavy duty mirror / picture hanger (Mitre 10, Bunnings probably has similar) Simply mount one track on mirror or picture, then install the wall track with included anchorless fasteners.
We’re really happy with how it turned out. The colours are just right and it’s nice to bring another textile into the room. Plus, it makes our basic bed look about a million times nicer and more expensive!

The planned freight hub is absolutely enormous (100-120 ha) and it may be that the increased noise from it will impact on some Kelvin Grove residents, so please make sure that you have your say at the upcoming public drop in sessions – the first ones are today! 9-1pm at the Plaza and 3-7pm at Bunnythorpe school. The proposed site has several million dollar houses in its firing line, and will also impact on many others. Our thoughts are that building it so close to Palmy is not a good plan, given all the extra noise and busyness it will bring! We also feel that the Kiwirail’s consultation with the community when deciding upon the location has been shockingly poor – there was NO opportunity before the site was decided upon to give any feedback – in fact, Kiwirail refused to give any details about the four sites they were considering. And affected landowners were given less than 24 hours notice before the announcement of the preferred site, that their land is to be compulsorily acquired – some of these families have lived in their homes for decades, our hearts go out to them.
The community now does have an opportunity to provide feedback, so please have a close look so that you don’t miss out on having a say!!

Don't come home from Covid ravaged countries abroad and complain that the red carpet is not rolled out for your privileged arse.
Whilst you were abroad enjoying the sights of the world and/or chasing inflated incomes; the rest of us were at home working hard, paying taxes, and social distancing in lockdown. The same taxes that are now supporting your free hotel isolation, the hospitals that have cared for your loved ones; and the same lockdown that has provided you with a Covid Free and safe country to return to.
What makes you think you can walk straight back in and demand a job (or benefit) and house ahead of the many thousands of loyal Kiwis that have waited in the queue and kept the fires burning during some very tough times in recent years. Why is it you are returning home now I ask? Moaning to media just amplifies your arrogance.
Also note that thousands of resident Kiwis haven't even been able to visit their loved ones in hospital, let alone hold funerals for their departed. Equally, remind yourself that you made conscious decisions to leave family behind for everyone else to care for, but now you are expecting (demanding) special exemptions to pay your last respects.
Thus, if you can not muster the gratitude and guts to isolate correctly for a minimum of 14 days and abide by medical officers requests, then go straight back to where you come from and hand in your Kiwi passport on the way out. We don't need you.

New Zealand’s minimum sick leave allowance is one of the lowest in the OECD. In Australia they get 10 days, in most European countries it’s even more.
