However, no beautiful, large orchid flower had popped out. Instead, there were hanging bunches of small and unspectacular flowers. So clearly it was not an orchid and re-identification was necessary. Thanks to a suggestion from Em Penfold, I knew where to start and she was right, it's a Mexican Lily. (Enlarge for a better view.)
