So much of the time the event never happens or is no worse than usual weather patterns. My recommendation is to just view the local weather map. If there is a high coming it will likely be good to reasonable weather and if the isobars are close together and accompanied by a front it is probably going to be windy and wet.
In one case recently we were warned of huge 8 metre waves but the small print said in the Chatham Islands. I appreciate they are trying to help and bad events do happen (often without warning such as our recent tornado) but please a little common sense.
