This ridiculous intersection at Egmont Rd is a nightmare. Not only is it a poorly designed dangerous intersection, the designers chucked in a 100 down to 80kms speed change almost right on the intersection, then for good measure they decided to do all of this on the brow of a blind hill where traffic backs up due to the lights at Smart Rd...hmmm that was intelligent!
There have been so many accidents and near misses at this intersection it boggles the mind as to who dreamed up this idea in the first place.
The St John Ambulance service has a depot in Oropuriri Rd, and simply getting across the intersection to head to Bell Block or to negotiate traffic to get into town safely, hinders their ability to get to people. Time is of the essence for these people so they need a safe path to get to our loved ones and save lives.
I travel this intersection daily and my staff have to negotiate it numerous times each day. Almost every day I see or hear of close calls, accidents, or just plain stupid driving.
Health and Safety dictates that I need to take steps to keep my staff safe so they can return home each day to their families. What are the Health and Safety requirements for Waka Kotahi and their responsibility to keep NZ'rs safe?
Now I see the NPCD and Waka Kotahi are bickering over who's pocket money has to pay for this debacle! Come on now, let's get real, who's conscience is it going to rest with when someone gets killed?
Trying to shift responsibility by using the originally proposed extension of Oropuriri Rd to Henwood Rd as an excuse is simply farcical. No one could have foreseen the issues around Maori sacred grounds and the impact this would have, so now someone needs a new plan.
This is Waka Kotahi's responsibility as it is on a STATE HIGHWAY, there is no other party consideration here...stop duck shoving and just get on with it.
I signed Sam and Rod's petition and I'm sure everyone who knows about it has too but they need more to sign...come on people, sign it here -

After you've signed the petition please also take a moment to share it with others. It's super easy, just copy the above link and email it, message it, send it however you want... just share it to everyone.
Thanks
