New Plymouth Community Foodbank and Waitara Foodbank Pataka Kai work closely together to provide a much-needed service within our communities with this year tracking towards being our busiest year on record with more people reaching out for assistance.
Our annual Christmas food drives were a success in December however due to increasing demand for our services we need to top up the shelves and pay some bills.
So, we are collaborating to raise funds by hosting a charity auction this June, with all proceeds to be utilised within our communities to support people who are experiencing food insecurity.
Donations of quality goods, experiences and services are needed to make this event a success – we would appreciate your support with a donation from your business. If you would like to buy a ticket to the event please check out events.humanitix.com...
On behalf of Waitara Foodbank Pataka Kai and New Plymouth Community Foodbank, ngā mihi nui.

Tucked away between Waimea St, Pembroke St and Frankley Rd is a recreational area known variously as Waimea Stream Reserves, Salaman Simpson Reserve and more recently Founders Plantation. The land was a farm belonging to Abraham Wally Mohamad Salaman in the 1930s. It passed on to his wife Annie Salaman Simpson who sold it to Riddick Brothers and Still in the late 1950s. They subdivided the area, with the land bordering Waimea stream gifted to the Council as reserve contribution. By the early 1990s it was fairly derelict, and Merrilands Lions (sadly no longer in existence) teamed up with the Taranaki Founders Society to plant 1991 native trees to commemorate the city’s 150 th Jubilee . Two large stainless-steel monuments document the many hundreds of individuals, families, societies and businesses who donated trees and helped to plant them. The inscribed names and messages can be found in the attached pdf file – is your family among them??
New Plymouth Central Lions have taken on the task of looking after the plantation, with many working bees organised to clean up weeds and invasive trees, and plant more native trees and shrubs supplied by NPDC. Methanex and Dialog Fitzroy have also lent a hand. We would love to know whether there is a map or grid reference in existence that shows where people planted their trees (you can see in the photo that the trees are laid out in a very orderly fashion). Please contact us if you are aware of one!
We also hope to hold a public BBQ to welcome back those families that have ancestors or members or businesses that planted or sponsored trees. We hope you’ll come and see how your trees have grown and view your name on the memorial pylons and plaques, while sharing your family history that is now commemorated by the Founders Plantation. The planned date is Saturday 4 th of May at noon, with a couple of fall-back days if the weather is bad. Please let us know if you would be interested in attending this ( Contacts: Roger 027 554 7006 Charles 027 839 7775 )
We look forward to hearing from you!

What you need to know:
- Every part of the plant is poisonous, and can cause gastroenteritis, thirst, paralysis, blindness, and heart and kidney failure.
- This plant is hardy and normal pest control efforts are often not enough to eradicate.
- The cape tulip, growing up to 90cm high with one strap-like leaf, was introduced to Aotearoa in the 1940s, the Ministry for Primary Industries’ manager for pest management John Sanson said. “Cape tulips, like many of these invasive weeds, are really attractive ornamental species ...but they escape over people’s backyard fences and into pasture, as these things often do,”
- It was classified as a noxious plant in the late 1970s after they were discovered to cause harm to livestock and humans, even killing animals when too much as ingested.
- The salmon-pink flowers bloom for about two days a year between June and December, and have previously been an ornamental species for keen gardeners.
Sanson urged people who believed they had the weed growing on their property to leave it untouched and contact Biosecurity New New Zealand’s Exotic Pest and Disease on 0800 80 99 66.
Once a site was confirmed, manual removal or chemical treatment would start.

Have you heard of this Organisations?? Do you know where they are??
I guess that the Waitara kind of gives it away. Yes, they are in the main street of Waitara at 56 McLean Street.
What are they about? They are a Profit for Purpose store – their tag line is “We will do our best in ensuring that the funds raised from the purchases you make are invested purposefully into serving our people and planet.”
All Heart New Zealand Projects pride themselves on redirecting 90% of corporate items from landfill – currently that is 5.8Million+kgs and funds saved or raised $17.6Million. Sounds like big numbers!
How do they do that? – They promote a circular economy by repurposing unwanted corporate resources, making a positive environmental impact. Their approach supports partner organisations and aims to raise sustainability standards for a sustainable future. They hold accreditations and memberships with Akina Impact Suppliers, Auckland Business Chamber, Sustainable Business Council, Sustainable Business Network, Volunteering Auckland, and Zero Waste Network.
What do they Offer? A practical framework that lets any corporate anywhere, divert anything from landfill.
Putting People First
Their approach to corporate social responsibility is centred on empowering communities, reducing poverty and increasing access to education, while protecting the earth.
What do they redirect to the Waitara Store?
Office Furniture, Tech Equipment, Soft Furnishings, Stationery, Hospitality goods, Corporate uniforms, End of Line Products, Cutlery / Kitchenware, Textiles.
Their Impact partnerships include nationwide business like; Mitre 10, The Warehouse Group, AA Insurance, Air New Zealand, Bunnings, Fonterra, NZ Safety Blackwoods, Countdown/Woolworths, Waste Management, NZPost, and Make a Wish New Zealand; to name some of the business connections that we have locally.
Currently Deena, the Store Manager, is supported by one other staff member and a couple of volunteers who pop in or can be called upon. It would be absolutely fabulous if there was someone interested in learning retail skills, who could offer a couple of hours a week. This would be great also for someone who is keen to work in a very supportive workplace, or someone wanting to return to work, or equally someone who is interested in environmental sustainability.
Deena is very welcoming and always keen to have new people join the team and there are a variety of skills to be learnt or to be utilized in the work that is being done in this space.
My first visit to the All Heart Store and meeting with Deena, I left having purchased a new (to me) office chair – which is so very comfortable and high-end quality at an incredibly reasonable price and a couple of metal filing containers, a large tin of coffee, and milo and large box of tea. It is definitely worth a visit – stocks are always changing, and a new delivery of stock is expected next week. Check it out and tell Deena you read the article.

They are here in New Plymouth, and they are more than their shop in Fitzroy. In South Taranaki the shop is in High Street, Hawera. These shops are there to help support the amazing work that they do in the community to support those in need – including providing clothing and furniture assistance, providing weekly community meals as well as providing support for individuals and families experiencing hardship.
The Society of St Vincent de Paul is an international Catholic lay organisation inspired by the gospel of Jesus Christ. Their Mission is to work to provide person to person, practical and effective help to those in need, sharing their burdens and joys, sewing seeds of hope and promoting human dignity, justice and self-sufficiency, working in a caring and practical manner to promote human dignity and justice through personal contact with those in need.
When I started my investigation for this column the name of the Founder Frederic Ozanam rang a bell and so checked and yes Ozanam house in Palmerston North was the brainchild of Palmerston North society members who when doing their hospital visits realized that there was a need for a home where relatives of out-of-town patients could stay. So in 1967 they purchased a comfortable four bedroomed home a few meters from the hospital and as we know this is still going – now operated by and independent trust board. However, this shows the compassion the Organisation and its people have for others.
In the words of the Founder Federic Ozanam “In my life I want to become better and do a little good”.
Locally here in Taranaki there has been a conference for over 100 years and are very fortunate to have two op shops operated by St Vincent de Paul Hawera and Fitzroy which are both open Monday – Friday 10am – 3.00pm. The funds raised contribute to the amazing work that is done in the community as well as repurpose items for another life.
The community meal on a Tuesday night at St Joseph’s Hall is another project that St Vincent de Paul provides. This is a project that the younger members of the society, young Vinnies participate in, and you can see them at work in the kitchen and serving.
The amazing team also supports other community organisations who are helping those who need extra support. They are always keen to have new people to join the team and there are a variety of skills to be learnt or to be utilized in the work that these amazing people achieve for our community.
If you are interested to learn more about the work of St Vincent de Paul listen to Volly Voices on Access Radio 104.4FM on April 28th at 2pm and repeated on May 5th also at 2pm where Kevin Hartfield - coordinator chats about their work locally.
