Summer tourism forecast warming up for Nelson
The forecast for Nelson’s tourism sector is starting to look more promising in the lead-up to summer.
Campgrounds have been reporting big increases in demand for the Christmas/New Year period, although other accommodation providers were having to adapt to a less structured domestic market.
Tahuna Holiday Park operations manager Peter Fraser said the domestic market was “off the hook” this year.
“We are chokka at Christmas time, and even the shoulder periods are filling up – it could be one of the best summers we’ve had for a long time.”
Fraser said while Tahuna was always a popular destination for holidaymakers, the demand for accommodation had picked up a lot earlier.
He said while most of the people coming to Tahuna were from the same places as usual, such as Christchurch, the effect had been amplified this year.
Poll: Do you think banning gang patches is reasonable?
With the government cracking down on gangs, it is now illegal for gang members to display their insignia in public places whether through clothing or their property.
This means arrests can be made if these patches are worn in places like restaurants, shops, on public transport or ferries, and on airplanes. Arrests were made recently at a funeral.
