Have you ever bought swan plants with pesticide on them and been dismayed to see your monarch caterpillars squirm and later die? The Monarch Butterfly New Zealand Trust is this year listing on their website garden centres that will never sell swan plants.

You'll also find some of the other reasons noted there why monarch caterpillars can die. Of course predators (wasps etc) can be a problem too and there are tips elsewhere on their website to help with those.

We hope to see many more beautiful monarch butterflies filling the skies this summer!

Poll: Would you watch a live stream of council workshops?

The Team from Neighbourly.co.nz

A bid to have council workshops live-streamed has narrowly failed after it was argued staff would feel constrained by the public eye.

The Nelson City Council voted seven to five not to live-stream the briefings at a full council meeting on Thursday. Read more from the Nelson Mail here.

The task between now and December 2022 was to build 454 cellular sites across New Zealand. The top 400 of those sites would service about 34,000 rural households while the next 54, which were "stretch targets" if funds allowed, would service another 2500.

In Tasman district, 20 of the proposed sites are part of the top 400: Maruia West Bank, Bainham, Creighton, Lee Valley Rd, Torrent Bay, Abel Tasman National Park, Kikiwa, Pakawau, Nguroa Bay, Glenhope, Nelson Lakes campsite area, Lake Station, Pohara, Blue Lake, Ariki, Shenandoah, Takaka, Mahana, Matiri and Parapara. Another seven sites were part of the 54 "stretch targets". They are: Puponga, Tadmor Glenhope, Awaroa Bay, Woodstock, Stanley Brook, Redwood Park and Eighty Eight Valley.

Poll: Should New Zealand take in 1500 refugees? Is it enough?

The Team from Neighbourly.co.nz

The annual refugee quota will lift from 1000 to 1500 by July 2020, Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern announced this week. Before 2016 the refugee quota sat static at 750 for 30 years, well behind many other western nations. The National Government then raised it to 1000. Is it enough?
